The father of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, was Francisco Engracio
Rizal Mercado y Alejandro. He was born in Laguna's Biñan. Governor General Narciso Claveria ordered that all native Filipinos have a unique family
name, so his family name was changed to "Rizal". Juan Mercado and Cirila Alejandro were his parents. Lam-Co, his great-grandfather, immigrated to
China from Fújiàn.

The mother of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, Teodora Morales Alonzo Realonda de Rizal y Quintos, was born in Meisik, Tondo,
Manila. Teodora was Lorenzo Alonso and Brijida de Quintos' second child. Governor-General Narciso Claveria's proclamation from 1849 stipulated
that their family took on the surname "Realonda de Rizal".

The oldest child of Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso Realonda was Saturnina Rizal. She got married to Tanauan, Batangas native Manuel
Hidalgo. Paciano Rizal was Jose Rizal's only sibling and his second child. In addition to working as a farmer and attending San Jose College in Manila,
Paciano was a general in the Philippine Revolution. Narcisa, Olympia, Lucia, Maria, Concepcion, Josefa, Trinidad, and Soledad were the other sisters
of Jose Rizal. The youngest child, Soledad, eventually wed Pantaleon Quintero.

The Rizals is considered one of the biggest families during their time. Domingo Lam-co, the family's paternal ascendant was a full-blooded Chinese
who came to the Philippines from Amoy, China in the closing years of the 17th century and married a Chinese half-breed by the name of Ines de la
Rosa.

Jose Rizal also obtained the surname Rizal after dropping three other names that made up his full name. Jose Rizal also retained Protasio as his
other family name. His family never actually recognized their Rizal surname, but Jose Rizal was forced to use it so that he can travel freely and
disassociate himself from his brother Paciano, who was notorious because of his links with native priests who were executed after they were found
to be subversives.
