My 98 sport with 4.0l cut out on me a few weeks ago

while at a stop light. Restarted, put in drive , lurched and
cut out. Every time I put it in drive it cut out. Ended up
having it towed to a buddies shop where it acted fine after
they drove it around and never showed any codes
Picked it up and drove it for a few days with no problems.
Changed the plugs, distributor cap, rotor and wires which
were in horrible condition and cleaned the IAC valve and it
ran fine for a couple of days. The motor actually ran very
well.
Drove it to the window tint place and it tried to cut out
again when at a stop light. Drove it to the shop and it
cleared up again

Now it is making a whining noise when you put it in gear

and especially reverse. At some points it does take a
second to kick in when giving it throttle.
I figured it was the torque converter and was about to just
get a new transmission which i can get for $1000 since it
had 220,000 miles on it but I dont want to do that and it
be something else

Fluid is clean and not burnt, no codes coming up. Other

than having it towed back to my buddies shop which is a
pretty good ways off, I dont know what else to do.. Any
suggestions as to what this might be.

Thanks in advance

The whining noise is coming from the front of the

transmission

That does sound like it's related to the torque converter.

The torque converter it just a connector between the

engine and tranny and has nothing to do with how the
engine runs.

Among other things it does, the torque converter is what

allows the engine to idle in gear when you're stopped at a
stop light. If the torque converter is locked up the engine
wouldn't be able to idle.

Right except when it locks up it can cause the engine to

stall which was the intitial symptom. I was just noting that
since I did the plugs etc the motor itself was running good
which I was happy about but I still have the transmission
noise

That does sound lihke it's related to the torque converter.

So, given the mileage on the transmission, would it just

be better in the long run to replace the whole thing
instead of just doing the converter? I can get a reman for
$1000,with 3 year warranty

I should also mention that I think I'm about to do a lift and

tires etc etc etc so just looking at the long haul

If that $1000 is doable I probably would since there could

be other things going on that wouldn't be fixed by
replacing just the torque converter. Too bad you're not
closer to SOCAL where one of the best/honest Jeep
transmission shops in the US exists.

That's kinda what I was worried about.
