A.C. BOW THRUSTER

A.C. MOTOR WIRING

The A.C. motor provided for the Bow Thruster must be connected properly if the unit is to operate
correctly. The motors shipped with the unit are either nine or twelve lead motors. With but very few
exceptions, all the motors are dual voltage units. All wiring should be in compliance with any governing
authority and, as a minimum, with U.L. and the N.E.C. requirements.

All the motors have lead numbers imprinted on the wire leads leading into the wiring box on the side of
the motor. Determine the voltage and use the appropriate chart for the motor when making your final
connections. Use adequate size wire for the installation to insure minimum voltage drop from the power
source to the inverter and from the inverter to the motor. Motor wiring should be isolated from control
wiring to prevent noise interference. Refer to section AC Drive Manual for some guidelines and
information.

AC MOTOR DRIVE CONSTROLLER

The AC Motor Drive is an inverter based three phase motor driver. The basic unit consists of an inverter,
3 phase electric motor, and control station or equal. The provided drive motor adapter allows the motor to
be connected to a WESMAR Bow Thruster. It is recommended that the user become familiar with the
Inverter Manual and the WESMAR Thruster Manual prior to operating the drive. Additional models are
available, which allow multiple Control Stations to be connected to the AC inverter through a transfer
control panel. Only one station can be selected at a time, but transfer is available at any station in the
system or immediate selection, and an indicator light on the handle shows if the control station is active.
Models are available for larger HP drives and 3-phase generators if needed, but the basics are the same
for all the AC models.

Installation

A modified seal/bearing retainer is provided along with the AC Motor to Thruster adapter. The retainer
plate must be installed with the lubrication fitting pointing up unless the motor is mounted in a vertical
position. Horizontal mounting is recommended, because the weight of the motor must not be supported
by the Thruster or the tunnel tube. Adequate support for the motor cannot be over-emphasized. The motor
adapter can be assembled to the thruster in three positions but only one allows the support feet of the
motor to be parallel with the centerline axis of the Thruster shafts. There are eight bolt holes in the motor
end of the adapter but only four are used. When the proper orientation is set, four holes will make a
square with the sides parallel to the Thruster centerline. Figure #1 shows the relative position of the motor
to thruster assembly.

Wiring

The Drive Control requires proper wiring to operate. Refer to the manual for recommendations
and requirements.

2
WESMAR PROPORTIONAL JOYSTICK
The WESMAR proportional joystick allows for the control of a variable speed controller for a
thruster installation and gives direction and speed signals. The assembly also displays run and
fault status conditions of the drive controller to the user.
The control lever and display lights are watertight and sealed to the front panel. The panel is
designed to be installed in a 4 ¼” square cutout in the dash panel. A built in gasket provides a
seal from the panel to the mounting surface.

The center light is also a push button for allowing the user to select the control station for operation in a
multiple control installation. The amber light is illuminated when the station is active.

The RED light indicates a fault in the drive and the GREEN light indicates that the drive is in run mode.

TRANSFER BOX WIRING

The thruster drive may be controlled by up to five separate control heads by the use of the control transfer
box. The unit allows the independent selection of any one unit at a time to be in control of the inverter
drive and the motor/thruster combination.

Connection to the control heads is made with a 10-conductor 22 or 24 awg cable. The cable is connected
to the control head with a 10-pin connector terminal. The other end of the cable is connected to the
transfer box to a 10-pin terminal. Be sure to connect pins 1 through 16 to the respective pins 1 through 10
on each terminal.

The transfer control box is wired to the inverter drive with a 10-conductyor 16 awg cable.

4
REAR VIEW AC JOYSTICK

The direction switch in the upper right corner has a center off position that allows the lever to be moved
without the drive being activated. Install a milliamp meter in series with the wire connected to pin 5. The
current should be 3.9 ma. Adjust pot R2 (offset), until this is set. Move the lever to port or starboard fully and
the reading should be 20.0 ma. Adjust pot R1 (span) until this is set. Return the direction reverse switch to the
left or right position (note; if the thruster goes to port when the lever is to starboard, reverse this switch
setting. Do not change the switch polarity switch in the upper left corner of the board. This switch is used for
selecting the type of configuration with positive being used for multiple control installations and negative
being used for single station systems. The system should now be set up to operate the drive as needed with
zero speed at center and full speed at hard over of the lever to port or starboard.

The joystick is pre-calibrated and tested at the factory but final installation may require readjustment of
the current loop.
