1. A liquefied mixture gas contains 0.07% H2S and 99.93% CO2. Calculate the concentration (ppm) of H2S in
CO2 when the gas is vaporized. (M.W.(H2S) = 34) (10 points)
2. Silicon rods used in the manufacture of chips can be prepared by the Czochralski process in which a cylinder
of rotating silicon is slowly drawn from a heated bath (see the image below). 30 kg of silicon in the initial
bath is completely consumed for 2 hrs when cylindrical ingot is to be removed slowly from the melt at the
rate of 3 mm/min. Calculate the diameter of silicon ingot in cm. Assume that the silicon ingot has a specific
gravity of 2.33. (10 points)
3. Assume that methanol and twice the stoichiometric amount of air needed for complete oxidation of the
CH3OH are fed to the reactor, that 90% conversion of the methanol results, and that a 75% yield of
formaldehyde occurs (based on the theoretical production of CH 2O by reaction 1). Determine composition of
the product gas leaving the reactor. (10 points)
4. Determine the ratio of the recycle stream to the fresh feed stream if the overall conversion of benzene is 95%
and the single-pass conversion through the reactor is 20%. Assume that 20% excess hydrogen is used in the
fresh feed and that the composition of the recycle stream is 22.74 mol% benzene and 78.26% hydrogen. (10
points)
5. Toluene reacts with H2 to form benzene (B), but a side reaction occurs in which a by-product, diphenyl (D),
is formed:
(diphenyl)
The process is shown in figure below. Hydrogen is added to the gas recycle stream to make the ratio of H 2
to CH4 1 to 1 before the gas enters the mixer. The ratio of H2 to toluene entering the reactor at G is 4 H2 to 1
toluene. The conversion of toluene to benzene on one pass through the reactor is 80% and the conversion of
toluene to the by-product diphenyl is 8% on the same pass. Calculate the mole fraction of R G (10 points)
