Languages in India

namaskaar, aaj main bhaarateey bhaashaon ke baare mein baat karane ja raha hoon
Which means, “Hi, today I am going to talk about Indian languages” India is a country with an
amazing culture and history but, What would it be without a language? I mean, language is the
way people communicate with each other and is a vital part of human connection so this has to
do a lot with the culture. Moving on, I want to mention family languages, which means that
some dialects share history with each other. In India we have Indo- European, Indo - Aryan,
Dravidian, Austroasiatic and Sino-Tibetan families..

Now could anyone guess how many dialects are spoken in India? The answer is over 700.
And now you could ask… Doesn’t India have an o cial language? This amazing country
doesn’t have one o cial language… It has 22. I could name some examples like Bengali,
Punjabi, Marathi… But the main ones of those 22 are Hindi and English. Hindi is an Indo-
Aryan language, descendent of Sanskrit language and is spoken by 43.6 percent of the
population. English on the other hand, is spoken by 30 percent of the population and has the
role of second language. It is useful for administration, education, science, trade, and
technology.

In conclusion, India has a rich variety of dialects that come from other families of languages.
This amount of languages represent the lengthy and diverse history and culture that India has.
Before concluding I would like to say a “fun fact” . Did you know that all Indian scripts come
from the same script, which is Brahmi? Well now you know, Thank you for listening.
