Literature
- The word literature is derived from the Latin term litera which means letter.
- Literature is anything that is printed, as long as it is related to the ideas and feelings of people, whether
it is true, or just a product of one’s imagination.
- Literature refers to composition that deal with life experiences. It tells stories, dramatizes situations,
expresses emotions, analyzes, and advocates ideas.
- Literature is a term used to describe written and sometimes spoken material. literature most
commonly refers to works of the creative imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, and
in some instances, journalism, and song.
-Literature allows a person to step back in time and learn about life on Earth from the ones who walked
before us. We can gather a better understanding of culture and have a greater appreciation of them. We
learn through the ways history is recorded, in the forms of manuscripts and through speech itself.
-A children's book can provide springboards to meaningful discussions about many different topics
which can further develop a child's critical thinking skills. At its core, literature is one of the best ways to
help kids understand something without necessarily having to experience it for themselves.
Children's Literature
- Children's literature includes stories, books, magazines, and poems that are created for children.
Modern children's literature is classified in two different ways: genre or the intended age of the reader,
from picture books for the very young to young adult fiction
-Children's literature is often defined as a collection of books written for children, read by children,
and/or written about children.
-children's literature, the body of written works and accompanying illustrations produced in order to
entertain or instruct young people.
-Children's literature is of value because it fosters personality and social development. Children are very
impressionable during the formative years, and children's literature can help them develop into caring,
intelligent, and friendly people.
-Children's literature can not only be used to teach students how to read and write but can also help to
increase their language, emotional, and cognitive skills. As previously stated students can learn about
global values and become more skilful at problem solving as well as thinking critically and creatively.
-Children's Literature” is defined as material written and produced for the information or entertainment
of children and young adults.
-help your child get to know sounds, words and language, and develop early literacy skills.

PICTURE BOOKS
-picture book" is commonly used to describe a book, most often written for children, in which the
content is conveyed through the use of words and pictures in combination or through pictures alone.
-A picture book combines visual and verbal narratives in a book format, most often aimed at young
children. With the narrative told primarily through text, they are distinct from comics, which do so
primarily through sequential images.
Picture Books are books in which the pictures are as important as the text or only consist of picture
which when put together tell the story.
Picture books allow them to develop crucial reading comprehension skills without spending their energy
simply trying to understand the words on the page in the first place. The images tell the story just as
much as the words do, which is perfect for helping struggling readers develop comprehension.
What is the purpose of Picture books
At a most basic level, picture books help kids understand that words convey meaning—connecting the
pictures in the book with the words on the page. Kids will check pictures on the page for background
knowledge or contextual clues for vocabulary development. They even use the images to learn the
names of new objects.
-The Cat in the Hat is a book where an eccentric stranger (who's a cat!) visits two children, Sally and
Sam, who are home alone and having a very dull day. Their mother is out, and when the Cat comes in,
he reassures the kids that their mother won't mind him or his tricks!
-Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American Children's author and Cartoonist. He is known for his work
writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss.
-Dr. Seuss is probably best known for his books to help children learn to read.
-Traditional literature consists of stories that have been passed down orally and in written form
throughout history. Traditional literature is found in cultures throughout the world reflecting the norms
of it's people.
-Traditional literature encompasses books rendered from oral tradition--stories that have been passed
down for ages (Kiefer, 2007)--and as a result are commonly shared throughout the world. This literature
includes folktales, myths, fables, and legends."
-Children often get the first true sense of their surrounding world through traditional stories as they can
subtly teach children the importance of respecting different attitudes, cultures and religions, among
many other things.
-The purpose of traditional literature is having the story be relatable to everyone. For this reason,
universal themes are important to the genre. Some common themes include good versus evil, the weak
versus the strong, the beautiful versus the ugly, and the rich versus the poor.
Unknown Authorship
-Authors are sometimes not identified or they are given as 'Anonymous'. When the author is given as
'Anonymous', Anonymous takes the place of the author's name in the in-text citation and in the
reference list.
Stereotypical characters
-A Stereotypical Character is a familiar type of character whose label identifies a particular group or
segment of society.
-Stereotypes are a type of symbol used by cartoonists. Just as a light bulb above an American comic strip
character's head is understood to mean an inspiration, stereotypes symbolize complex ideas that are
quickly and easily interpreted by readers.
What is Anthropomorphism?
-the showing or treating of animals, gods, and objects as if they are human in appearance, character, or
behavior: The books "Alice in Wonderland," "Peter Rabbit," and "Winnie-the-Pooh" are classic examples
of anthropomorphism.
Fables feature animals given human characteristics and deliver a lesson or moral. Folktales are stories
with people as main characters that sometimes include feats of strength. Fairy Tales is a simple
children's story about imaginary beings.
Poetry
- A genre of literature which refers to those expressions in verse with measures and rhyme, line and
stanza and has more melodious tone.
-a simple definition of poetry. Poetry is a type of literature that aims to evoke an emotional response in
the reader through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm.
-A Verse is a collection of metrical lines of poetry. It is used to define the difference of poetry and prose.
It contains rhythm and pattern and more often than not, rhyme.
Epic poem
-a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds.
Narrative poem
-A narrative poem is a longer form of poetry that tells an entire story, with a beginning, middle, and end.
Narrative poems contain all of the elements of a fully developed story, including characters, plot,
conflict, and resolution.
Dramatic Poem
-a poem written in verse (meaning it possesses a metrical rhythm or rhyme) that is meant to portray a
story or situation.
Sonnet
-Traditionally, the sonnet is a fourteen-line poem written in iambic pentameter, employing one of
several rhyme schemes, and adhering to a tightly structured thematic organization. The name is taken
from the Italian sonetto, which means “a little sound or song.”
-Reading rhyming books to young children is an excellent way to promote brain development and early
literacy skills. Nursery rhymes also help babies and children: Increase their linguistic exposure and allow
them to acquire new words and sounds. Improve their early reading abilities by expanding their
vocabulary.
-Reading biographies helps nurture children's empathy. Picture book biographies offer a priceless
glimpse into the lives of others. Honoring a real person's lived experience, they can raise your child's
awareness about races, cultures, religions or philosophies that differ from your family's own.

Characters can be pure fiction or based on real people (often, it's both).
Fiction
-A fiction is a deliberately fabricated account of something. It can also be a literary work based on
imagination rather than on fact, like a novel or short story. The Latin word fictus means “to form,” which
seems like a good source for the English word fiction, since fiction is formed in the imagination.
-Fiction refers to books and stories about imaginary people and events, rather than books about real
people or events. Immigrant tales have always been popular themes in fiction. Diana is a writer of
historical fiction. A statement or account that is fiction is not true.
Non-fiction
-Nonfiction is a broad genre of writing that encompasses all books that aren't rooted in a fictional
narrative. Nonfiction writing can be based in history and biography, it can be instructional, it can offer
commentary and humor, and it can ponder philosophical questions.
-the branch of literature comprising works of narrative prose dealing with or offering opinions or
conjectures upon facts and reality, including biography, history, and the essay (opposed to fiction and
distinguished from poetry and drama).
Fiction is usually defined as the product of imagination that an author carries in his mind. While on the
other hand, nonfiction is the process of writing informative content that is based on some facts. Fiction
contains many genres such as romance, humor, science fiction, thriller, etc.
-There are many ways reading fiction aids children's cognitive development. First, through exposure to
different narratives, children who read fiction will experience improvements in language fluency,
comprehension skills and capabilities in creative writing.
-Nonfiction develops and extends vocabulary, builds a background information, and helps the child
make connections to the natural world.
