with explicit dialogues and allusions.

materialism.
A: In this scene, Matthew Conaughey meets Jordan Belfort for the first time. He is
presented as an overconfident, dominant, wealthy and quite vulgar man. The viewer can
later see that this scene was foreshadowing what Belfort will soon turn out to become by
even having the same suit and reproducing the same gestures. This foreshadowing was
carefully made by Scorcese in order to emphasize that the American Dream creates
“clones” of wealthy people with the exact same personality. These mens are not able to
think for themselves and simply follow the values of the American Dream without
thinking as society’s pressure to become successful is too overwhelming.
Example 2
P: Setting
E:
A: In this extract, Jordan Belfort and his coworkers are hosting a party in a huge house
in front of the beach with dozens of guests. The party is super crowded with people in
elegant clothing in a gigantic house with a huge pool showing the over consumption and
attention to materialism of Belfort and his colleagues. This extract shows that the
“american dream” enforces its followers into wanting to show off to other people by
having luxurious and gigantic things which creates a stereotypical image associated with
wealth.
Transition to extract During Jordan Belfort’s inspirational speech, the American dream and its effects on
society are being explored through the use of monologue, symbolism and wardrobe.

P: Symbolism
E:
A: In this passage, Belfort throws a gold watch in the crowd, which all of the employees
fight for. The scene concludes by one of the workers catching the watch and the rest of
the employees start fighting him. While Belfort’s speech was quite explicit about the idea
of “the american dream”, this passage shows the effect of the speech and the values it
was communicating by symbolizing the gold watch as the idea of wealth and success for
the working class, represented by Belfort’s employees, which is represented as a
tangible object (the watch) to suggest materialization. The crowd then starts to fight the
man holding the watch in a chaotic mess that almost seems animal. This is done to
show that humans completely lose their reasons when it comes to money and wealth as
it was forced into them as the ultimate problem solver.
P: Wardrobe
E:
A: In this scene, the wardrobe chosen for the characters is mostly business shirts and
classic ties which are often associated with the working class stereotype in the United
states. Jordan Belfort is a big focal point of this scene as he is wearing a luxurious suit
and a gold watch, making him stand out from the rest of the characters. This scene is
used by Scorcese to once again represent American Dream’s impact as Jordan Belfort,
being richer than the side characters in the room, is getting more attention and stands
out more suggesting that people need to work hard and be successful in order to get
attention and be different from everyone else.
Transition to Text 2 The second analyzed in this presentation is “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzerald

character, Gatsby.

Transition to extract In The Great Gatsby’s final scene, the American Dream’s negative effect on individuals
is shown through the use of metaphor, setting and allusion.

P: Allusion
E: “gradually I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors;
eyes a fresh, green breast of the new world. Its vanished trees, the trees that had made
way for Gatsby’s house [...] man must have held his breath in the contemplation he
neither understood nor desired [...] with something commensurate to his capacity of
wonder.”
A: In this extract, Nick makes an allusion to the dutch sailors stepping on American
lands, which can also be interpreted as a metaphor to Gatsby’s love for Daisy. This
quote has a significant importance in the text, the “vanished trees” are used to show the
way the American dream and the materialism it causes affects society overall and
destroys everything on its way. There is also an important contrast between the past and
the future where the explorers contemplate these lands without trying to change it in any
way whereas Gatsby would do anything to impress Daisy by creating a completely new
personna of “Jay Gatsby” and getting involved in criminal activities to make money. This
extract therefore shows the way the american dream affects individuals which then have
an effect on society.

lets the reader interpret the story by himself as the symbols can be seen in different

about since, as proven in those 2 stories, it tends to create a fake image of success
around a materialistic and extravagant life which inevitably ends up in the downfall of the
protagonist as life does not rely simply on money and success. In the Great Gatsby, the
reader may see the american dream as a form of escape from social class’s struggles
and a desperate attempt in seeking love again, whereas The Wolf of wall street has a
more simple image of a pathetic materialistic dream, which nonetheless ends up badly
