Gender equality is a fundamental human right and a necessary condition for
Mexico’s social, economic and political development. Despite the constant
struggle in recent decades, significant conflicts between men and women are
still present in various areas. Cristal Pelayo (2023) in the article “The
importance of equality for women in Mexico” explains that “gender equality
is a key issue for women in Mexico. This is because they face many barriers
due to their gender, including violence and limited opportunities.”

Continuing with Pelayo’s article, it is mentioned that this topic is fundamental

to know how family roles are in Mexico, and helps to understand the political
systems in the government of the country, as well as to generate positive
effects in society and, of course, be promoted at all levels of government.
(Pelayo C. 2023).

The purpose of this report is to present an overview of the current situation

of gender equality in Mexico, just a few months before the elections for the
presidency of the country, because of the three candidates, two are women
and it is speculated that a woman will win the candidacy.
Leading woman in society
Women leaders often face the so-called “gender gap”, which involves the
disparity of opportunities and recognition between men and women. This can
manifest in lack of representation in leadership roles, unequal pay, and
stigmatization of female leadership characteristics.

Cultural and social perception can also be a challenge, as some people may
have ingrained expectations about what a leader should be like. Women
leaders may face judgments based on gender stereotypes, such as the idea
that they are less assertive or capable.

Importantly, despite these challenges, many women leaders have

demonstrated excellence and contributed significantly in various fields,
paving the way for future generations. Promoting gender equality and
eliminating prejudices are key steps to overcome these obstacles.

Socially, the presence of women in leadership roles can foster a more

inclusive and equitable environment. Gender diversity in leadership brings a
variety of perspectives and approaches, which can result in more informed
and creative decisions. Additionally, women leaders often play a crucial role
in promoting more flexible work practices and creating policies that support
work-life balance.

Opportunities for women leaders have also expanded with initiatives and
programs that seek to address the gender gap in the professional field.
Companies and organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of
gender diversity in their leadership teams, providing additional opportunities
for talented women.

It is essential to highlight that although there has been significant progress,

challenges still exist and the fight for gender equality continues. Continued
support for inclusive policies and the promotion of equality are essential to
ensure an environment where women leaders can thrive socially.

Some stereotypes that are sometimes associated with women leaders include
the perception that they are overly emotional, less assertive, or that they
must adhere to certain behaviors traditionally considered “feminine.” They
may also face judgment based on their appearance or personality compared
to traditional stereotypes of male leadership.

Additionally, some people may have conflicting expectations, where female

leaders are expected to be strong and determined, but also friendly and
understanding. These stereotypes can create additional challenges for
women leaders in balancing these contradictory perceptions.

It is important to note that these stereotypes are limited and do not reflect
the diversity of leadership skills and styles that women can possess.
Overcoming these stereotypes contributes to the creation of more equitable
work environments and promotes a more accurate and fair view of female
leadership.
