THE SCREAM

The Scream of Nature was painted by Norwegian expressionist artist Edvard Munch. In
fact, he created four different versions of this painting between 1893 and 1920. In one
of his diaries, the artist described the inspiration for the agonizing image of his work,
which later he turned into a poem.

"I was walking along a path with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky
turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was
blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked
on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing
through nature". Source: Wikipedia.

Art critics agree that Munch was not interested in reproducing pieces of reality in his
paintings. Instead, he wanted to portray situations filled
with emotional and expressive content. That's why in The Scream the artist carefully
combined all the details to create a tense atmosphere and depict a state of mind rather
than an external reality.
