ABS 1-2

Overview of Antilock Brake System (ABS)

The Antilock Brake System (ABS) improves the vehicle braking performance on a slippery road surface.

Antilock Brake System (ABS)

When the brake is applied and the tires lock, frictional force between the tires and road surface rapidly decreases. As a
result, the braking distance may increase or proper braking orientation may be disturbed.
In order to prevent such troubles, usually pumping brake is used. ABS applies pumping brake only to locked wheels at a
speed of several times the braking force of a man to decrease the braking distance and stabilize the braking orientation.

Caution:
A needle is braze to the end of the testing rod of the tester not to
damage the pins to be measured.

Caution for removing and installing the speed sensor

Front side Rear side
• When installing the speed sensor harness, route the wiring in the
possible shortest distance.

<Reference>
• For the fixing direction of the speed sensor harness when
installing it, refer to the angle in the figure. (The figure indicates
the right side. The left side is the reverse of this figure.)
• Connect the harness connector with the connector on the vehicle
side firmly
• Close the connector box cover correctly.

Caution:
Observe the cautions in the figure strictly when handling the speed
sensor harness.

Grommet position
• Match the grommet position to the end surface of the marking as
shown in the figure.

Caution:
Fix the 2 wires of the harness together with the grommet.
ABS 1-9

Adjusting the speed sensor gap

• After replacing the hub bearing or removing the speed sensor, the speed
sensor gap should be adjusted following the procedure below.

(1) Push in the speed sensor using the plastic part until it touches the
sensor holder.

(2) When the hub is installed, the speed sensor is pushed back by the
exciter ring which has been press-fitted to the hub periphery, so that
the tooth surface of the exciter ring and the speed sensor detecting
part come in contact with each other, providing the specified gap
(0mm). (When the gap increases to 1.0mm, the wheel speed is not
detected any more resulting in failure.)
ABS 1-10

Inspecting and Installing the Exciter Ring

Inspection
A. Inspection of damage B. Measurement of wobbing

Exciter rings are used front or rear wheels.

20" front Steel, punching type

Front

Rear

A. Inspecting the exciter ring (cutting and punching type)

• Measure the height of the exciter ring teeth.
Check for indentation, chipping of teeth and tooth edge, etc.
Replace if any damage is noticed.

Nominal dim Service limit

Tooth height 2.5 mm
Indentation ——— 0.3 mm
Chipped tooth edge ——— 0.3 mm

• For the pressed hole type exciter ring, check for indentations and
scars on the plane surfaces.
ABS 1-11

B. Measure the wobbing of exciter ring

Measure the run-out at 8 to 10 points around the entire periphery.
• If the thickness gauge of 0.15 can be inserted, the wobbing is not
permissible. Re-fit the exciter ring correctly or replace.

C. Replacing the exciter ring

• Face the tooth surface toward the brake ASM side and press-fit
the exciter ring using a jig until the back side of the exciter ring
(surface without teeth) comes in contact with the hub stopper.
• Check the wobbing of the tooth surface after installation.

Wobbing of tooth surface mm

To axis 0.2 or less

• When installing the exciter ring, be sure to push the point of the
jig as shown in the figure to press-fit the exciter ring.

Caution:
Never reuse the removed exciter ring.

Indication of Diagnostic Trouble Codes

When the ignition key switch is turned ON, the diagnostic switch
(connector) is kept ON for more than 2 seconds and then turned OFF, the
system configuration code is indicated on the information lamp (IL lamp)
first. By repeating the diagnostic switch operation within 5 minutes, first
trouble is indicated by the flashing information lamp and, after repeating
the same operation again within 5 minutes, the second trouble is
indicated by the flashing information lamp.
Repeat this procedure until the first code is indicated again.
