LET'S TALK ABOUT MUSIC

a. Read the following text:

There are many types of music in the

world. My favourite type is pop music.
I love this type of music because it helps
me to feel better whenever I feel bored.
Some of the most famous musicians are
pop singers.
Michael Jackson, Maria Carey, Ed
Sheeran, Justin Bieber, and the list goes
on. Pop music often includes danceable
tempo, easy to remember lyrics, and the
music lyrics are often flashy.

1
Sometimes, when I'm doing homework on my computer, I play music on
YouTube in the background. I also watch music videos between study
sessions when I take breaks. My favourite pop song is James Arthur's
"Impossible." It's a beautiful song about hope and it makes me think about
working harder. All my friends love this song and we listen to it together. We
also love listening to the Weeknd's songs, as he's a talented musician.

Live music is incredibly entertaining. Whenever a pop artist is performing in

a show near our city, I beg my parents to take me. Music concerts are full of
fun, you see people singing along, and the public dancing, and at the end of
the show, you can rush to the singer and ask for an autograph. Furthermore, I
don't recommend going to concerts without an adult because some bad
people go there also.

b. Are these sentences True or False? Write T for the true statements and
correct the false ones.

I watch music videos before sleeping._________

I listen to music when I'm doing homework.________
My friends love listening to The Weeknd's songs. ________
I love music concerts.________
I recommend going to concerts with teenage friends._________

c. Answer the questions about the text:

What do pop songs often include?

Who is the writer's favourite singer?
Why does the writer beg his parents?

d. Look at the highlighted words in the text. What can you say about them?
Are they nouns, verbs or adjectives? Is the text written in the present or the
past tense?

REGULAR VERBS IN THE PAST
a. Do you know Leonardo Da Vinci? Is he from the past

Leonardo da Vinci was a painter, engineer,

architect, inventor, and student of all
things scientific. His natural genius
crossed so many disciplines that he
epitomized the term “Renaissance man.”
Today he remains best known for two of
his paintings, "Mona Lisa" and "The Last
Supper." Largely self-educated, he filled
dozens of secret notebooks with
inventions, observations and theories
about pursuits from aeronautics to human
anatomy.
His combination of intellect and
imagination allowed him to create, at least
on paper, such inventions as the bicycle,
the helicopter and an airplane based on
the physiology and flying ability of a bat.

GENDER EQUALITY IS?

Gender equality is equal right for men and women, just as simple as that.

c. Read, think and debate

Jobs still split along gender lines

Around the world, finding a job is much tougher for women and minorities
than it is for men. When women or transgender people are employed, they
tend to work in low-quality jobs in vulnerable conditions and in many places
with low or inexistent rights.
More common jobs are related to personal care, cleaning, home stay job,
teaching professions or occupations related to personal care (89%),
cleaners (84%), office clerks (80%), health technicians (78%) and teachers
(71%).On the other hand Jobs related to construction, transport, industry,
politics, builders (97%), drivers and mobile plant operators (96%), metal
workers (96%), science and engineering technicians (83%) and science and
engineering professionals (74%) and science occupations all over the world
are represented by men.

2018, her speech at the United Nations COP24 in Katowice, Poland, went viral. "You

GLOBAL CITIZEN LIFE DEFEND THE PLANET

5 Activists Who Are Transforming Plastic Waste Into Beautiful Art,

Accessories, and More.

Over 8.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced in the last 70
years, yet only 8% is recycled.

By Aaron Rakhetsi
February 12, 2021

Recycling has become a way of life globally and one of the most important
ways to reduce plastic pollution. Seeing the need to reduce plastic waste
globally, some artists have taken the matter into their own hands, reusing
plastics and using their platforms to raise awareness about the
issue of plastic pollution. Here are six activists using creative and
unconventional methods to transform plastic waste into art.

1. Nzambi Matee, Kenya

On Feb. 28, 2017, Kenya’s plastic bag ban officially came into effect —
the world's toughest single-use plastic ban.
Before the ban came into place, Kenya was using and discarding an
estimated 24 million plastic bags every month; drainage systems would
often get clogged up; and more than 50% of cattle in urban areas were
found with plastic in their stomachs.

32
In 2018, Nzambi Matee and three other young Kenyans established a
social enterprise called Gjenge Makers, which manufactures bricks using
discarded plastic. Before launching their enterprise, they would collect
plastic waste, sort it, and sell to bigger recycling companies. Their plan
soon changed and they started to collect it for themselves for their own
projects.
They collect and shred the plastic, and combine it with sand to make
environmentally friendly products, such as paving bricks and manhole
covers. The products they produce are used by schools and to make
paved footpaths all over Kenya.

2. Adeyemi Emmanuel, Nigeria

Adeyimi Emmanuel is a Nigerian visual artist and environmentally

conscious fashion designer, who describes himself as “an environmental
artist busy creating life out of plastic.”
Emmanuel owns a line of bags called ECO, which are primarily made out
of plastic waste. He has also branched out to make several art pieces
using plastic bags and other recyclable products. Lagos, where Emmanuel
lives, has a huge plastic pollution problem and the plastic clogs the city's
streets and drains, and can often cause flooding when it rains. The amount
of plastic waste in Lagos inspired him to want to raise awareness on the
issue, and create art out of the discarded plastic. He was once walking along
the street when he decided that he could make bags and wallets out of
plastic. It was a great decision!

3. Daniel Webb, UK

In 2016, Daniel Webb was taking a run along the coast at his home in
Margate, England, when he came across a heap of seaweed that was
entangled in plastic. After that encounter he became much more aware of
his plastic usage, and the amount of plastic packaging he came across in
stores and supermarkets. For one year, Webb stored his everyday plastic
products — enough to fill over 22 garbage bags. With all the plastic waste he
collected during that period, he then made “Everyday Plastic", a huge mural
that is now located in an amusement park called Dreamland in his
hometown.

The future of love

The future of technology

The future of food

The future of work

37
Technologically, the 20-year jump from
2015 to 2035 will be huge. During that time
some elements of our world will change
beyond recognition while others will stay
familiar. So, what will our world really be
like in 2035? What does the future hold for
the food we eat, the technology we use
and the homes we live in? The world in
2035 will probably be much like it is today,
but smarter and more automatic.

The next major food revolution will be vertical agriculture. Vertical farming,
genetically modified (GM) crops and synthetic meat will be responses to the
growing need for greater food efficiency as populations continue to grow.
But there will also be a reluctant realisation that we all need to eat a better
diet, one that is more plant-based and less reliant on processed foods.

We are becoming more independent and less constrained by the old social
norms. This will have an impact on the relationships we form, with fewer
people choosing traditional marriage, a rise in official (and unofficial) civil
partnerships, and more people remaining single for longer, if not forever.

Rather than humans working with machines, automation will make some
jobs redundant: taxi drivers replaced by self-driving Uber cars or
receptionists replaced by robots. Obviously, there will also be new jobs
created: the computer engineer/mechanic who fixes the self-driving Uber
taxis and programmers- Technology will continue to disrupt businesses and
eliminate jobs, creating new professions we can’t yet imagine.

Technology will get smaller, smarter and cheaper. In fact, it will most likely get
so small, smart and cheap that we’ll be able to put computers and sensors into
almost anything. We’re on the road to the internet of things where everything
is connected, not only to the internet but also to one another. The future is...
unpredictable. But whatever happens next, it will be a great time to be alive.

Which rights does she mention?

What is the most important right for her? Why?

[...]
There are hundreds of human rights activists and social workers who are not
only speaking for human rights but who are struggling to achieve their goals
of education, peace and equality. Thousands of people have been killed by
the terrorists and millions have been injured. I am just one of them. So here I
stand, one girl among many. I speak not for myself, but for all girls and boys. I
raise up my voice – not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice
can be heard. Those who have fought for their rights:
Their right to live in peace.
Their right to be treated with dignity.
Their right to equality of opportunity.
Their right to be educated.
[...]
Dear sisters and brothers, I am not against anyone. Neither am I here to
speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban or any other terrorist
group. I am here to speak up for the right of education of every child. I want
education for the sons and the daughters of all the extremists, especially the
Taliban.

One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world.
Education is the only solution. Education first.
