Reading Comprehension
Fred is far from his country on Christmas time.
Read about his feelings and answer the questions
below (0.2 each correct answer).
The laughter of our loved ones in
a family reunion, the extra hugs and
kisses they are willing to give us, and the
home cooked meals we enjoy on special
occasions. Those are the things we all
take for granted and simply, let go by
without much appreciation until we
don’t have them so often anymore...
I have vivid memories in my head, like pictures of all the
things we used to do for Christmas in my hometown. It is
not that every year we would celebrate in a different way:
“variety” was not a word in grandpa’s vocabulary. In fact,
for many years we did the same on Christmas’ Eve: We used
to get together at his house, light some fireworks, sing some
Christmas songs, eat roast pork, listen to Uncle Ronnie tell
his funny jokes, and open presents after midnight. In my
teens, I almost felt tired of so much repetition and wondered
what it would be like to spend the New Year far, far away in
a totally new place being surrounded by people other than
my relatives, doing different stuff and getting to know other
cultural traditions.
This is the year 2019, and here I am: miles and miles away
from home spending Christmas on my own in a foreign
country for the first time. Am I as happy as I used to be in
the past? “homesick”, would be a better word. I used to
believe that different was better, but not many things change

among cultures when it comes to celebrating in family:
We would always get together, and that’s what people
do here in Switzerland. Some things look a little different,
though: the decorations, the lights, the taste of food.
However, in essence, it is all the same. I really miss what
I had for so long and became so usual to me on Christmas
T F time: The things we believed in, the smell coming from our
kitchen, the sounds that came from our neighbors’ homes
and the simple fact of sitting together in the living room,

waiting for the clock strike 12:00 at midnight to yell, “Merry
T F Christmas!” and hug each other again.
Now I realize that, in the end, that’s what tradition is
all about. It is not where you are or what you do. It’s about
T F what you are willing to give and do for those you love what
makes memories last a lifetime in your heart.
