PAST SIMPLE

We use past simple for:


➔ Things that happened at a specific time in the past (it is important to know WHEN it
happened).
Example: He left for New York yesterday.

➔ In questions after the word WHEN.


Example: When did you buy that purse?

STRUCTURES FOR PAST SIMPLE

1. Affirmative Sentences
● Regular verbs for all singular and plural forms: [SUBJ + VERB + ED]
Examples:
➢ I kicked the ball.
➢ He watched TV.
➢ They cleaned the house.

🚩 Pay special attention to verbs ending in E, for these you add D instead of ED
➢ LIVE → LIVED
➢ CLOSE → CLOSED
➢ WIPE → WIPED
Also pay special attention to verbs ending in Y preceded by a consonant, for these you add IED
instead of ED.
➢ SPY → SPIED
➢ ENVY → ENVIED
➢ STUDY → STUDIED

● Irregular verbs for all singular and plural forms:


[SUBJ + IRREG V. IN THE PAST]
Examples:
➢ I taught her everything she knows.
➢ They built a house last summer.

2. Negative Sentences
● For all singular and plural forms, regular and irregular verbs: [SUBJ + DIDN’T + VERB]
Examples:
➢ I didn’t want to come.
➢ We didn’t meet at work yesterday.
3. Questions
● For all singular and plural forms, regular and irregular verbs: [DID + SUBJ + VERB]
Examples:
➢ Did you talk to him today?
➢ Did she call you last week?
