 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This project is an attempt to know how the theories can be applied to a practical situation. As a
student in UiTM Arau, it is a part of a study for everyone to undergo a case study project. So, for
this purpose, I got the opportunity to research a company which manufactured the same product
that I want to develop, which is Elianware® household plasticware company that also develops
dustbin, currently based in Malaysia.

In the first part of the project report, I able to collect general information of the company such as
the background of the company, technology used and different kind of furniture that the company
manufactured.

In the second part of the project report, by doing the SWOT analysis, I able to distinguish the
strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of this company and figure out a better technology
system solution that can be implemented in the company to cope the current issues that opposed
by the company. The strategy and planning to improve the existing system are essential in
business development growth.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Waste management is the practice and acts needed from its source to its final
disposal to handle the waste. It involves, along with supervision and control, the
collection, storage, processing, and disposal of waste in addition to other issues.
It also offers a legal and regulatory structure for waste management, including
recommendations for recycling. The term usually includes forms of waste wholly,
whether produced during raw material extraction, raw material processing into
intermediate and final products, final product consumption, or other human
activities, including municipal, agricultural, and social (United Nations Statistics
Division - Environment Statistics, 2016). Practices in waste management are not
consistent between developed and developing countries, urban regions, rural
areas, residential, and industrial sectors. Many researchers and industry are,
therefore seeking a resolution to find a smarter way of managing waste pollution.
This research will focus on developing a dustbin that integrates with the Internet of
Things (IoT) to make it more features and be a smart dustbin. IoT based – Smart
Monitoring System using Arduino and Blynk will help manage waste pollution more
efficient.

1.2 Problem Statement

Today in the age of rapid urbanization, hundreds of flats and apartments were built.
Due to high demands for housing, which have risen dramatically as a result of
migration from villages to cities. The government has constructed more apartment
complexes to accommodate the growing population in the urban area. The
residents of the flats face several issues, and one of them is solid waste disposal.
The residents of all the apartments use a standard dustbin, unlike private houses,
which tend to fill up very fast. This overflowing of garbage may be a sanitary issue
which could cause diseases like Indian cholera and break a bone (Anwar et al.,
2018). A complicated process is a conventional way to monitor dustbin waste,
which requires extra human effort, time and cost.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the case study is to fully get access to the details of this product
and its company to detect possible flaws and product regarding aspects that can
be picked up to come up with an analysis of SWOT. Hence, the best
implementation of innovations that were going to be added to the given problem.
The target company that I want to make improvements is Elianware®.

2.0 COMPANY INFORMATION

2.1 Background

Ee-Lian Enterprise (M) Sdn. Bhd. is a complete household plastic ware provider
specialising in the design, development, manufacturing and distribution of a wide
range of quality and innovative plastic storage, preparation, containment, serving
and cleaning products for the home, office and industrial applications.

Established in Penang in the year 1994, from a small trading business 22 years
ago, EE-LIAN has evolved into a major industry player with proven capabilities and
achievements, with the distribution of coverage of its product “ELIANWARE®”
throughout Peninsular and East Malaysia. We also expanded our export markets,
namely ASEAN countries, the Middle East, Africa, and others.

Their R&D team is continuously researching and launching new products with
attractive designs and unique packaging to capture the interest of the consumers.
They strive to develop and market quality plastic ware by using only virgin raw
material to make them durable and aesthetically attractive to the consumers.
Furthermore, EE-LIAN is now ISO 9001:2008 certified for its quality management
system (Elianware - Leading Plastic Containers Manufacturer In Malaysia, n.d.).
Ultimately, they provide the consumer with excellent quality products at a
competitive price, prompt delivery and flexible service through their
uncompromising commitment towards total consumer satisfaction.

2.1.1 Vision and Mission

Vision is to enhance and improve the quality and way of life in every household. In
line with the company’s vision, they will deliver the best value to their consumer,
supplier and employees as a leading manufacturer in Malaysia by providing
quality, reliable and innovative household plastic ware.

Elianware is producing and distributing over 1,600 stock-keeping units of

household plastic wares to local and overseas consumers. Majority of the Group’s
products are distributed and marketed under its brands. Elianware’s products are:

2.4 Technology

The technology that Elianware produce is based on plastic products such as

baskets, food keeper, candy storage and canister, pail, basin, bottles, jug,
dinnerware, chairs, dustbins and many more. The technology that been use by the
company can be view by category of the products.

Plastic Container Supplier

Due to concerns over the safety of plastics on human health, BPA-free plastics
have become ubiquitous in the market. Most of the Elianware plasticware are
labelled with BPA-free, except those manufactured from Polycarbonates (PC). As
an experienced plastic container supplier, the company understand that good
design and product innovation assist in establishing consumer loyalty and trust, as
well as to command a price premium. Reduced or inadequate designs mark the
success of the product in the market. Innovation is linked with creativity and
involves taking new ideas and turning them into reality through research and new
product development. In order to be the best plastic container supplier in Malaysia,
they always introduce innovative, eye-catching plasticware designs frequently to
appeal to both trendy customers

Plastic Pail Manufacturer Malaysia

The company is known as a reputable and reliable plastic pail manufacturer in
Malaysia. They began offering industrial pails for in the year 2000. Currently, they
are supplying excellent quality industrial goods such as industrial pails which are
catered to the paint and lubricant markets. Medical disposable bins as one of their
latest plastic pail product are slowly consumed in the medical industry.

BPA Free Bottle Supplier Malaysia

Produce and distribute a wide range of BPA Free water bottles and tumblers in
many colours, designs and sizes in Malaysia. Bisphenol-A (“BPA”) is a chemical
that is added to plastics to make them more flexible and more reliable. BPA-free
plastics become popular in the early-2000s due to several studies that found that
the effects of BPA on the body could be carcinogenic. BPA-free plastics are
healthier and are unlikely to leach chemicals into food and beverage stored inside
them. BPA-free plastic is also better for the environment because the chemical will

 not leach into the ground or other nearby products under heated conditions. We
are one of the largest local tumbler suppliers in Malaysia.

2.5 Business, marketing, operational strategy

Elianware® products are available directly from Ee-Lian Group of Companies in

selected markets and worldwide through a network of qualified resellers and
distribution partners. In Malaysia, the majority of our products are in full national
distribution and therefore available at most hypermarkets, departmental stores and
other retailers. However, it is the retailers who decide which products go to their
stores.

2.5.1 Business strategy

Currently, Elianware® group is producing and distributing over 1,600 stock

keeping units (“SKUs”) of the household.

Majority of the Groups’ product is distributed and marketed under its brands.
✔Characters’ Royalty:
The Group has also been awarded the right to produce and distribute
household plastic wares which are housed under the ‘Disney’ and ‘Warner
Bros’ brand name in Malaysia

2.5.2 Marketing strategy

As a digital presence in this era, Elianware® pioneer in the market to mark their
presence in the online shopping platform. The consumer can buy the product on
Shopee as an official partner for Elianware® without need to go to a physical store
such as Ceria99, TF-Value Mart, Tesco, and others. Via online shopping, they
provide many discounts, voucher and offer to attract consumers.

2.5.4 Operational strategy

They start to producing a variety of plasticware to grow their company and fulfil
customer needs. Following that, it requires a high cost to produce much product,
but in the long term view, it returns high profit later.

All the manufacturing facility and warehouse is operating at Bukit Minyak Industrial
Park, Penang. In 2013, they had established a showroom in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur
to better server their customers.

4.0 FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

4.1 Findings

4.1.1 Strength

Based on the SWOT analysis, the strength is the high quality of the product. A lot
of good feedback testimonials are gain from the buyers. In recognition of the
company’s proven track record and its commitment to high standards of
manufacturing process and management, EE-LIAN has been bestowed with many
awards and recognitions. Not only that, but it also has a comprehensive range or
type of products, including new and innovative dustbins, bathroom bin, baskets,
tableware and many more to fulfil different market needs across the globe. Last
but not least, the product itself is readily available in many major supermarkets and
departmental stores all over the country. Hence, this makes the company gain trust
and widely used.

4.1.2 Weakness

Meanwhile, there are also weaknesses in this product. It is just like the majority
dustbin that was sold. It does not have a system and alternative to check the
garbage level in the dustbin. It requires consumer to manually open the dustbin lid
and look inside to check the garbage level in the dustbin. Other than that, this
product just has two convenient ways to open the dustbin’s lid, which are by hand
or push the pedal with foot. Next, the product does not have a system that can
track the location of the dustbin. For the consumer that buys dustbin to place it
outside the house, it is not safe. Nowadays, there is cases dustbin being stolen at
some residential area. It will make the consumer spend more money to repurchase
dustbin. The dustbin just a simple dustbin with a limited function without any
special features that can help the consumer in their daily life.

4.1.3 Opportunities

Following that, to achieve a better market and excellent financial results, the
company has secured that with a few opportunities. First, the company has been
awarded the right to produce and distributed household plastic wares which are
housed under the ‘Disney’ and ‘Warner Bros’ brand name in Malaysia. It will attract
the fans and followers from the characters itself to buy and use the products that
have the character design on it. Next, the company also well-know within
household plasticware industry and corporate company. Other than that, the
company has been bestowed with many awards and recognition year by year.
These circumstances will give advantage to the company as if the corporate
company would always use their services and product.

4.1.4 Threats

Despite that, it is unexceptional to the company to be around the threats

Elianware® might face a risk of being imitated by other competitors. The
competitors could imitate the design or maybe business strategies. Besides, since
the company is work with famous characters, there is a risk of licensed being
terminate and make them lose power also the market.

4.2 Discussion

From the above finding, I can conclude that there are several issues or
disadvantages of the dustbin. Do not have a system to check the garbage level in
the dustbin, do not have an automatic open and close lid, cannot detect dustbin
location, and limited in functions. This era, human need something more to make
their daily life much more comfortable. The waste pollution in the residential area
is the major problem today. It occurs because dustbin is not being used wisely, or
the dustbin got stolen and cannot be tracked again. The garbage in the dustbin
cannot be monitor and lead to overflow. All of the problems can be overcome by
integrating dustbin, with IoT technology.

5.0 RECOMMENDATION AND IMPROVEMENT

I discover there are some advantages and disadvantages of the product. Found that their
product does not have a system to check the garbage level, just have a convenient way
to open the dustbin’s lid, and limited functions.

Approach new functionality of the product in order to be an appeal in the industry and
attempting to solve the current customer needed, the dustbin should have an improvement
in the functionality of the product. To add the new and better improvement is the Smart
Garbage Monitoring System, which has automatic open and close lid functions. Other
than that, it also builds in with sensor that helps to detect the garbage level in the dustbin.
The garbage level can be monitor with two ways which are by the LCD that attach on the
dustbin and Blynk application that can be accessed via mobile. Besides, using Blynk as a
cloud provider, it can track the location of the dustbin in real-time. This improvement can
help to overcome the problem. In the Appendices section, Figures 8.1 shows the Smart
Garbage Monitoring System Prototype.

6.0 CONCLUSION

In a nutshell, the Smart Garbage Monitoring System can help consumers in monitoring
garbage levels in the dustbin just through smartphones with Blynk application. Other than
that, it also helps waste collector company to keep track of the location of dustbin that
needs to be collected. It will help the company save time and fuel for the truck.
Furthermore, the dustbin also provides with a smart function which is an automatic open
and close lid.

Different steps are needed to bring in the broader range of customers to evolve the
company's product, monitor new markets, and increase global sales. By doing a SWOT
analysis, the company can do corporate planning as part of the development of
strategies. Besides, the company’s response has been to ride the wave of new
technological development and try to achieve the objective of the business. In
conclusion, customers face many problems from my findings and discussion after buying
the product. By carrying out this research, I observe, learn and acquire a new idea to
improve my new product, by taking the topic of the invention as our basis. The product I
am developing will become more cost-effective, safe to use, has many capabilities and
attractive features for users.
