Autodesk Revit is a powerful Building Information Modeling
(BIM) software that revolutionizes the way architects, engineers, and
construction professionals design, collaborate, and manage building
projects. At its core, BIM delivers information about project design,
scope, quantities, and phases when you need it. Unlike traditional 2D
CAD, where drawings are separate from the model, Revit ensures that
every drawing sheet, view, and schedule directly reflects the
underlying BIM database.

The software’s parametric change engine automatically

coordinates changes made anywhere—in model views, drawing sheets,
schedules, sections, and plans. Revit empowers accurate design,
efficient workflows, data-driven decisions, and seamless collaboration
across disciplines. Whether you’re an architect sketching the initial
concept or a contractor overseeing construction, Revit is your go-to
tool for BIM excellence.

Autodesk Revit is a building information modeling software for

architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing
(MEP) engineers, designers, and contractors. The original software was
developed by Charles River Software, founded in 1997, renamed Revit
Technology Corporation in 2000, and acquired by Autodesk in 2002.

Revit allows users to design a building and structure and its

components in 3D, annotate the model with 2D drafting elements, and
access building information from the building model’s database. It is a
4D building information modeling application capable of planning and
tracking various stages in the building’s life cycle, from concept to
construction and later maintenance and/or demolition.

While AutoCAD is a general drawing tool with broad application,
Revit is a design and documentation solution, supporting all phases and
disciplines involved in a building project. Revit is used to coordinate all
data inputs (including CAD) and produce federated project deliverables.
For first-time users, the Revit Quick Start Guide is a great place to
start. It covers key Revit concepts, the user interface tour, and basic
tasks and project management articles. It also provides sample project
files to show how to use Revit on a project.

In addition, Autodesk Revit has integrated to its own significances

such as Family-Based Modeling, Worksharing and Collaboration,
Phases and Design Options, Analysis and Simulation, Extensions and
Add-Ins Construction Documentation, Rendering and Visualization,
Industry-Specific Versions.

➢ Students would Familiarize with fundamental concepts in Revit,

such as BIM (Building Information Modeling), parametric
families, and the user interface.
➢ Learn about the basic elements like walls, floors, roofs, doors,
and windows.
➢ Students would learn the shortcuts keys/commands.

BIM at Its Core: Revit provides a comprehensive BIM environment
where information about project design, scope, quantities, and phases
is readily available.

Parametric Change Engine: One of Revit’s standout features is its

parametric change engine. It automatically coordinates modifications
made anywhere within the model—whether in model views, drawing
sheets, schedules, sections, or plans.

Family-Based Modeling: Revit enables users to construct and

manipulate parametric families, representing various building
components such as doors, windows, and furniture.

Work sharing and Collaboration: The work sharing feature in Revit

facilitates seamless collaboration among multiple team members by
hosting central models on a server while allowing individuals to work
on local copies.

Phases and Design Options: Revit supports modeling various

construction stages using phases, enabling designers to represent
existing structures, new construction, demolition, and more.

Extensions and Add-Ins: Revit's extensibility is enhanced through

third-party add-ins and extensions, addressing specific needs and
enhancing functionality. These tools cover areas such as reinforcement
detailing, clash detection, visualization, and more.

Analysis and Simulation: Revit integrates seamlessly with tools like

Autodesk Insight, enabling energy analysis for architects and
structural analysis for engineers.

Construction Documentation: Revit excels at generating detailed

construction documentation, including floor plans, elevations, sections,
and schedules that are automatically linked to the BIM model.

Industry-Specific Versions: Autodesk offers specialized versions of

Revit tailored to specific industries, ensuring optimal performance and
features for various architectural and engineering needs.

ARCHITECTURAL TOOLS
(WA) Walls- Use a Wall tool to create a non-bearing wall or a structural
wall in the building model.

(DR) Doors- Use the Doors tool to place a door in a

wall. Select a door type from the Type Selector.

(WN) Window- Use the Windows tool to place

windows in a wall or skylights in a roof. Select a

window type from the Type Selector.

(CL) Column- Use architectural columns to model

column box-outs around structural columns and for

decorative applications.

Floor- Use the Floor tool to create level, sloped, or

multi-layer floors.

Ceiling - Use the Ceiling tool to create a ceiling at a

specified distance above.

Roof by footprint- Create a roof from a building

footprint or an extrusion.

22
MODIFY TOOLS

(AL) Align- align one or more element with selected

elements.

(MV) Move – moves the selected elements to the

specified location in the current view.

(OF) Offset – copies or moves a selected elements

(such as a line, wall, beam) a specified distance

perpendicular to its length.

(RO) Rotate – rotates selected elements around its axis.

(SL) Split elements – cuts an element (such as a wall or line)

at a selected point or removes a segment between 2 points.

DATUM TOOLS

(GR) Grid – places column grid lines in the building design.

(LL) Level – add a level to the model.

DRAWING TOOLS
Line – creates a straight line or a chain of connected line segments.

Rectangle – creates a rectangular chain of lines by picking 2 opposite

corners.
