Review of Fraction Operations

1. Recall the algorithms (processes) developed to deal with fractions:

a) Adding and Subtracting Fractions
 Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions
 Find a common denominator
 Add or subtract the numerators
 Put the new numerator over the common denominator
 Reduce the fraction to lowest terms, if possible
 Convert you answer to a mixed number if necessary
e.g. Add the following:
a) b)

e.g. Subtract the following:

a) b)

b) Multiplying Fractions
 Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions
 Multiply numerators together; multiply denominators together
 Reduce the fraction to lowest terms, if possible
 Convert you answer to a mixed number if necessary
e.g. Multiply the following:
a) b)
c) Dividing Fractions
 Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions
 Change the division sign to multiplication
 Invert (write the reciprocal of) the fraction on the right side of the sign
 Multiply numerators together; multiply denominators together
 Reduce the fraction to lowest terms, if possible
 Convert you answer to a mixed number if necessary
OR
 Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions
 Find a common denominator
 The dividend is the numerator of the first fraction divided by the numerator of the second fraction
 Reduce the fraction to lowest terms, if possible
 Convert you answer to a mixed number if necessary
e.g. Divide the following:
a) b)

c) d)
