strategies used
by sports
psychologists to
enhance
athletes’ mental
toughness
and resilience
1. DON'T DWELL ON MISTAKES
It is common to make mistakes, what defines
a successful person is moving on rather than
focusing on failure.

Mentally tough athletes don’t dwell on the

past or feel sorry for themselves nor do they
concern themselves with distractions outside
of their direct control.

This can help athletes understand that failure

is another step in the journey towards
accomplishment
2. TAKE RISKS
Mentally tough athletes understand that fear
of failure prevents fully committing to and
achieving excellence in their sport.

This can let athletes seek out opportunities to

move out of their comfort zone.

Mentally tough athletes refuse to be average

and understand they may miss the mark on
occasions but it is worth taking the chance in
order to achieve great things.
3. PURSUE EXCELLENCE,
NOT PERFECTION
Athletes have a goal but their focus is on the
steps they need to take to get to that goal.

This helps athletes understand that they will

make mistakes along the way and these
mistakes are both necessary and critical
turning points in their journey towards
excellence.
How does the
mental state of
athletes during
competitions
influence their
performance?
Negative thinking can lead
to mental blocks, causing
breaks in focus and
preparation, poor
performance and, at times,
injuries to the athlete.
Athletes who are not
interested in their sport do
not perform well, because
they are not fully engaged
in practices, health
behaviors, or competition.
