Case Study: Planet Play Kenya Event Decor Fabrication
Planet Play Kenya brought out the best in our creative chops, pushing us to new heights—quite literally!
As a premier luxury event planning and design company based in Nairobi, Kenya, they specialize in curating bespoke events with a white-
glove service that’s second to none. Their vision demanded modular joinery for easy transportation and setup, and some of their installations
soared up to a whopping 6 feet high!
Handling such towering creations wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was also about practicality. We had to factor in the balance of weight,
especially for outdoor setups where strong winds could play havoc or on uneven terrains.
Here’s a snapshot of some of the stellar projects we’ve tackled for them on this grand scale. We relished the challenge, embracing the
opportunity to innovate within the event space. It led us to dream up interactive event items and explore new materials like aluminum, cast
iron, and hefty 15mm acrylic boards. It’s partnerships like these that keep our creative juices flowing and our skills sharp.

Case Study: Peponi Hotel Ashtrays
Peponi Hotel in Shela, Lamu sought a comprehensive branding and storage solution for their ashtrays, emphasizing specific criteria: a
square design measuring 10cm x 10cm x 10cm, easy mobility for efficient cleanup, and the incorporation of a sand storage system to ensure
the extinguishing of cigarette butts.
Guided by an initial sketch, we seamlessly transitioned to SolidWorks as the designated CAD software for the project, leveraging its
capabilities to create digital sketches, renders, and precise part diagrams tailored for CNC milling through our advanced CAM software.
To assess various aspects of the design, including finger joints and overall structural integrity, we crafted preliminary prototypes from
6mm plywood. Subsequently, the milling process took place using 15mm Mvule (Milicia excelsa), an esteemed timber variety renowned for
its application in crafting Lamu doors. This wood, with its open-grained, decay-resistant, water-resistant, and termite-resistant qualities,
proved to be the ideal material for the ashtray commission.
The finalized ashtrays were distinguished by the incorporation of the Peponi logo and a QR code linking directly to the hotel’s website menu,
offering patrons a seamless experience while awaiting service. As a concluding touch, a weather-resistant primer was meticulously applied,
followed by a coating of linseed oil for preservation, providing the ashtrays with durability against the elements.

Case Study: Kenya Red Cross Volunteer Awards
The Kenya Red Cross Volunteer Awards, an annual nationwide event, stands as a tribute to diligent, altruistic individuals who tirelessly
contribute to volunteer service for the greater good under the auspices of the Kenya Red Cross. Themed “Solidarity Through Volunteering,”
the event underscored the transformative potential of collective human action in fostering positive change through volunteerism. A total of
26 volunteers were recognized, each bestowed with an award in one of the 15 distinct categories.
Our responsibility encompassed the conceptualization and fabrication of all trophies for the ceremony, along with the creation of custom
boxes to house each individual accolade. Commencing with the ideation phase, we sketched iconic representations for each achievement,
translating these concepts into refined 2D illustrations that were subsequently extruded for meticulous modeling.
Diverse materials were employed in the trophy construction, incorporating 3mm acrylic in alternating red and black, adhering to the Red
Cross brand colors. The trophy faces were crafted from 20mm clear acrylic, while gold acrylic was employed for recipient naming. A solid
wooden mahogany base provided a sturdy foundation, culminating in a finish of weatherproof lacquer and clear varnish.
The trophy packs were meticulously assembled using 6mm acrylic, featuring intricate finger joints and a sliding top mechanism. Each trophy
was personalized with the winner’s name and prize, engraved for a lasting impression. The culmination of these efforts resulted in trophies
that not only symbolized the essence of each achievement but also reflected the prestige and significance of the Kenya Red Cross Volunteer
Awards.

Case Study: 30ml Pendant Light
As a team, we’re all about keeping things fresh and funky, constantly brainstorming wild ideas and bringing them to life to see how they
vibe with our space. The pendant light project was one of those brainwaves. We asked ourselves, “Could we whip up a DIY lighting solution
that’s not just functional but also turns assembly into a fun family activity?”
We kicked things off with some rough sketches, then dove into Fusion360, where we let our imagination run wild, sculpting a design that’s
like a funky topographic rollercoaster. After whipping up a slick, high-res render, it was time to put our material to the test. We got a bit
carried away and went for 12mm Mvule – it looked sleek as heck, but as soon as we hung it up, disaster struck! The cable snapped, and
down came our light, cracking on impact.
Undeterred, we switched gears to something lighter, settling on trusty 6mm plywood. It held up like a champ, even with those toasty halogen
bulbs, and best of all, it stayed put! We took that thicker material idea and ran with it, creating different versions of the lamp that could sit
pretty on any surface, just like the ones you’ll find on page 68.
This little hiccup turned into a design adventure, sparking a whole bunch of new ideas. We played around with lampshades that could tilt
(check out MR03041) and experimented with funky shapes to cast some seriously cool shadows when the lights are on. It just goes to show,
even when things go a bit wonky, there’s always a bright idea waiting to be discovered!
