Activity 3: Genre Criticism

Watch the movie Moulin Rouge and the based from it, write a literary critique using
Genre Criticism.

Introduction

Moulin Rouge is a 2001 movie directed by Baz Luhrmann. It tells the story of how
love conquers all and it is all about a poet, Christian, who falls in love with the
sparking diamond of a night club, Satine. Christian is obsessed with love, whereas
Satine is not, because she only wants shiny things to get away from Moline Rouge
and be a real actress. But that dream was banished once Christain came into her life
and showed her that love matters the most. There's this duke who's the villain
because he wants Satine to be his, but that doesn't happen because Christan and
Satine love each other. Satine was sick, and she died after their theater play in the
arms of Christian.

Production began in November 1999 and was completed in May 2000, with a budget
of $52.5 million. Filming generally went smoothly, with the only major problem
occurring when Kidman injured her ribs while filming one of the more complicated
dance sequences; she also stated in an interview with Graham Norton that she broke
her ribs while trying to get into a corset by tightening it as much as possible to
achieve an 18-inch waist.

The characters are:

 Nicole Kidman as Satine.

 Ewan McGregor as Christian
 Jim Broadbent as Harold Zidler.
 Richard Roxburgh as the Duke of Monroth
 John Leguizamo as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
 Jacek Koman as The Narcoleptic Argentinean
 Caroline O'Connor as Nini Legs-in-the-Air
 Kerry Walker as Marie
 Lara Mulcahy as Môme Fromage.
 Garry McDonald as The Doctor
 Matthew Whittet plays Satie.
 Keith Robinson as "Le Pétomane"
 Natalie Mendoza as "China Doll"
 Christine Anu, Arabia
 Audrey is played by David Wenham.
 Kiruna Stamell as "La Petite Princesse"
 Deobia Oparei as "Le Chocolat"
 Kylie Minogue, as well as The Green Fairy
 Ozzy Osbourne as The Green Fairy's laugh
 Peter Whitford as the Stage Manager

Body

Musical

Mouline Rouge has a musical genre because in every scene they sing what they
feel. Also, in the movie, they will act in a theater play wherein music is their way of
communicating.

Romance

It has a romance genre because Christian and Satine have a romantic love for each
other. In the end, love wins, even though there is a hindrance, which is the Duke,
who wants Satine for himself. Christian and Satine say that "come what may," which
means no matter what happens, their love for each other will be strong and will
always win.

Drama

It also has a genre of drama which has action. In the film, the Duke will do everything
just to have Satine for himself. He even wants Christian to be killed by his men.

Conclusion

When you watch Moulan Rouge, you will realize that love is very powerful, that love
is not easy, and that love will always win. Also, I very much appreciate their
costumes, make-up, and how the characters act, especially Nicole Kidman or Satine.
She really does her best to give justice to her character, and their music is very
catchy and meaningful. It will make you appreciate musical theater. All in all, it was a
very interesting film, which is why I do not doubt that it has a lot of awards, and they
really deserved those awards for giving us a film that is memorable and unique.
