Theater is the major art form that brings together all the other art
forms from painting and sculpture to installation art, to music, to dance, to
literature, even to computer arts in a single production. A story is acted out
on stage (or other performance area) by actors portraying the characters,
bringing them to life and developing the plot through dialogue and actions,
and sometimes through song and/or dance.
The Philippines has a rich and thriving theater industry that you may
be interested to venture into in the future. Productions range from original
plays with Philippine themes and settings to renowned theater classics from
past centuries to contemporary musicals from Broadway
End. In this module we will have an overview of some of the more prominent
theater and performing groups in the country and their major productions.

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Explains how an idea or theme is communicated in a selected performance
through the integration of musical sounds, songs, dialogue and dance
(A10EL-IVb-4);
Analyzes examples of plays based on theatrical forms, and elements of art
as applied to performance (A10EL-IVa-2);
Illustrates how the different elements are used to communicate the meaning
(A10EL-IVc-3);
Explains the uniqueness of each original performance (A10PL-IVh-1);
Designs with a group the visual components of a school play (stage design,
costume, props, etc.) (A10PR-IVe-1);
Assumes the role of a character as an actor/performer, or production staff
(director, choreography, light designer, stage manager) (A10PR-IVh-2);
Analyzes the uniqueness of the group that was given recognition for its
performance and explain what component contributed to its selection
(A10PR-IVh-3); and
Contributes to the conceptualization of an original performance (A10PR-IVd-
4)

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

o Explain how the idea or theme is communicated in the Philippine
theater and performing groups.

What is It
Philippine Theater and Performing Groups
PETA and Tanghalang Pilipino
In the past few decades, modern theater groups have continued to express the
distinctly Philippine interpretation of both originally written plays as well as adaptations
of foreign works translated into Filipino.
At the forefront of these are the Philippine Educational Theater Association
(PETA), founded in 1967 by Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, and Tanghalang Pilipino, the
resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, founded in 1987.

The productions of these groups span

the range from daring new presentations
of classical works, to the spectacle of
Philippine myths and legends, to
commentaries on current social and
political issues.

Meanwhile, other Philippine theater groups are also staging original and
adapted plays and musical productions, primarily in English. Best known among these
are Repertory Philippines, Trumpets, and New Voice Company. More recently,
Theater Down South has been added to their roster. And championing the cause of
the more classical form of musical performances is the Philippine Opera Company.
Repertory Philippines
In 1967, theater director Zenaida Amador fulfilled her dream of bringing the best
of Broadway and th actress
Baby Barredo, Amador established Repertory Philippines, a company that not only

4
staged English-language plays and musicals year-round but trained actors and
actresses as well. The company continues with this vision to this day.
Multi-awarded theater actress and singer, Lea Salonga, in fact, began her
career as a child lead in productions of Repertory Philippines. From there, she went
on to become an international stage superstar in the lead role of Kim in Miss Saigon
putting the Philippines on the world map in terms of theater talent.

Annie Miss Saigon

Also, 93 staging of
the international hit musical Les Miserables in Manila with an all-Filipino cast and
production team.

In its 2009 season, Repertory added a Filipino classic in English to its

productions A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, by National Artist Nick Joaquin. To
date, it continues to offer a mix of productions ranging from literary classics to
contemporary satires, comedies, and musicals.

Trumpets
In the 1990s, the Philippine theater
group Trumpets also began mounting
grand productions of originally written
musicals with a slant towards good values
for children and the whole family. Among
their plays have been Joseph the
Dreamer; First Name; The Lion, the Witch,
and the Wardrobe; Little Mermaid; Honk;
N.O.A.H.; and The Bluebird of Happiness.
The Bluebird of Happiness (Trumpets, 2013)
The intention of Trumpets is to provide wholesome theater experiences for Filipino
youth while also building up the Philippine theater-going public.Triumphant People's
Evangelistic Theater Society (Trumpets) was founded by Audie Gemora.

5
New Voice Company
Also making its own distinct contribution
to the Philippine theater scene is New Voice
Company, established in 1994 by Monique
Wilson also a Repe
protégée who went on to star on the
international stage. New Voice has earned a
reputation for staging thought-provoking
productions on daring and deep topics.

Philippine Opera Company
The Philippine Opera Company (POC) was founded in
1999 by a group of dedicated classically trained singers, led
by soprano Karla Gutierrez as artistic directress. The POC

Theater Down South

In 2007, Theater Down South was
founded, with Philippine theater mainstay
Michael Williams as artistic director. The
vision of the company is to widen the reach

What I Can Do

Theater Script Writing:

In this activity you are going to write your own script for a play that you want to
direct.
Follow the format proposed below as your guide in writing your script.
The script must be of influence by Filipino culture and tradition.

SCRIPT FORMAT EXAMPLE

There are several different ways that you can format a theatre script. The example
below is a standard formatting and one that we like. (Note that theater scripts and
film scripts are usually formatted in different ways.) If you have already written your
play and your formatting is different from this, do not panic. Formatting for the theater
is flexible up to a point. As long as there is a clear differentiation between stage
directions and dialogue, and the script is easy to read and carefully proofread, it may
well be acceptable. Do not forget to put your name and contact details on the cover
page.

7
ACT ONE
SCENE 1
Stage directions are usually given in italics. Some writers put them in UPPER CASE
ITALICS. OTHERS JUST PUT THEM IN UPPER CASE. The main idea is to
differentiate them clearly from the dialogue.

CHARACTER 1: Dialogue is written in sentence case. Character names are given in

upper case again to differentiate them clearly from the spoken dialogue.

CHARACTER 2: It is a good idea to set a second-line tab so that dialogue always

begins on the same vertical line. This makes it clearer and easier for actors to read.

CHARACTER 1: Dialogue is usually double-

speech but single-
the actors to differentiate between characters.

CHARACTER 2: Left align everything. Do not use right hand justification to the
document.

CHARACTER 1: Use a font like Times New Roman or Arial. Fonts like Courier New
and Arial Narrow are hard to read, and fancy fonts are just a nuisance. Remember
that this is a working document and must be easy for actors and directors to use.

Pause

CHARACTER 2: If you need to write in a pause, it should go in italics or upper case,

the same as other stage directions.

CHARACTER 1: (to herself) Brief stage directions that specifically apply to one
character can be put in the dialogue like this.

SCENE 2
It is a good idea to keep stage directions to a minimum. Directors and actors need
the space to put their own interpretations on what you have written. So, forget about
s integral to
the action of the play. They just annoy the director.

CHARACTER 3: Do not forget to paginate your script. It is also a good idea to put
the name of the script on each page as part of the header in slightly smaller print
than the dialogue.

CHARACTER 1: Proofread your finished script carefully AFTER you print it out and
BEFORE you send it to us. Check spellings, punctuation, line spacings etc. Your
play does not have to be grammatically correct and you might choose not to use
standard punctuation but it DOES need to be consistent. Poor proofreading
suggests a lack of professionalism.
THE END

Your script will be graded according to this Rubric:
