Tutorial 8 : Rotational Motion and Dynamics (Part 2)

Rolling motion
1. A 2.00 kg cylinder has a radius of 20.0 cm. It rolls without slipping along a horizontal
surface at a velocity of 12.0 m/s.
(a) What is its translational kinetic energy?
(b) What is its rotational kinetic energy?
(c) What is the total kinetic energy?

Given that Moment inertia of cylinder = 2
[Answer: (a) 144 J; (b) 72.0 J; (c) 216 J]

2. A circular ring is designed so that it has the mass of 2.00 kg and radius of 2.00 cm.
What is the total kinetic energy if it rolls with horizontal velocity of 12.0 m/s?

Given that Moment inertia of ring = MR
[Answer: 288 J]

3. A bowling ball of mass 7.30 kg and radius 9.00 cm rolls without slipping down a lane
at 3.30 m/s. Calculate its total kinetic energy.

Conservation of Energy (Rolling motion)

4. A solid sphere is constrained to rotate about a vertical
axis passing through the center of the sphere. A cord is
wrapped around what would be the equator, passes over
a pulley of negligible mass, and is attached to a mass
that is allowed to fall under the influence of gravity.

5. A wheel has a mass and diameter of 3.00 kg and 80.0 cm is placed on a frictionless
inclined plane as shown below.

The moment of inertia at the axis of rotation is 0.240 kgm 2. When the wheel is
released from rest, it rotates without slipping. Assume there is no loss of energy,
calculate the linear velocity of the wheel at the end of the plane.
[Answer: 5.11 m/s]

6. A hoop is rolling on a horizontal surface at speed v =3.30 m/s when it reaches a 15.0°
incline. (Moment inertia of a hoop = mr2)
(a) How far up the incline will it go?
(b) How long will it be on the incline before it arrives back at the bottom?
[Answer: (a) 4.29 m; (b) 5.20 s]

7.

A marble of mass m and radius r rolls along the looped rough track as shown in
figure. What is the minimum value of the vertical height h that the marble must drop
if it is to reach the highest point of the loop without leaving the track? Assume r << R

Angular momentum

moment inertia of the disk is 4.00 kg m2 and the torque acts for 0.0200 s, find
(a) the change in angular momentum

edge of a uniform moving turntable of mass 5.00 kg and radius 30.0 cm rotating at an
angular velocity of 60.0 rpm. Assuming the cat jumps onto the turntable in the same
direction as the rotation, find the net angular velocity of the system after jumping on.

10.0 rad/s. A small piece of mass 0.500 kg is dropped on the disc so that it sticks to
the disc 0.100 m from the axis of rotation. Determine the new angular velocity.
