Why is work is scalar when both force and the
displacement are vectors.
Because work is the scalar product of force and displacement.
Review and Assessment (TG)
Indicate the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector
from cross product of two vectors.
The magnitude of the cross product of two vectors is
multiplication of their magnitudes into sine of the angle between
them. The direction is perpendicular to the plane constituted two
vectors.
Find the magnitude of
torque produced by the 60°
300N force applied at an
angle of 60° to the swinging door shown in figure. (Ans. τ
=520Nm)
Does the moment of inertia depend on the homogeneity
(uniform distribution of mass)?
The moment of inertia depends on the homogeneity. An in
homogeneous body will have different of moment of inertia
although the axis is the same.
A motor capable of producing a constant torque of 100N m
is concerned to a flywheel with rotational inertia 10kgm 2.
What angular acceleration will the flywheel experience as
the motor is switched on? (Ans. 10rad s-1)
Under what conditions can a rotating body be in
equilibrium?
If the resultant force on the body is zero and the resultant
torque on the body is zero, a rotating body can be in
equilibrium.
In order to weigh a boy in the laboratory, a uniform plank
of wood AB 3m long and having a mass of 8kg is pivoted
about a point 0.5m from A. The boy stands 0.3m from A
and a mass of 2kg is placed 0.5m from B in order to
balance the plank horizontally.
Calculate the mass of the boy. Also
4. 8Nm
find the reaction force exerted by
the pivot on the plank. 5. 1.368 Nm
(Ans. 60kg) 6.1.25Nm
How can a springboard diver 7. 2850N, 2450N
increase his angular velocity after
8. 0.85N
taking off the board?
A2kg cylinder pulley with radius of 9. 1.01m
0.1 m rotates at a constant angular 10. ¼ ML2
speed of 2 rads-1. What is the 11. ω/2
angular momentum of the pulley?
(Ans. I= ½ MR2, L= 2x10-2kgm2s-1)
