GEE 2 – People and Earth’s Ecosystem

Understanding the factors influencing the distribution of plants and animals in

different environments is fundamental to ecology. One crucial factor in this context is
sunlight, which plays a pivotal role in the life processes of photosynthetic organisms. Sunlight
provides the energy necessary for photosynthesis, a vital process for plants and other
photosynthetic organisms. This study aims to investigate the correlation between sunlight
availability and the presence of various organisms within specific areas. The hypothesis posits
that if plants and other photosynthetic organisms require abundant sunlight, then the
distribution and diversity of organisms will vary based on the amount of sunlight received.
Through this experiment, we seek to show how sunlight influences ecosystems and the life it
supports.

Materials:
Spade or trowel Graph paper
Small sticks Safety goggles
Measuring stick Field guide
String (https://dokumen.tips/education/e
Thermometer cology-field-guide.html?page=1 )

Procedures:

1. Form a hypothesis:
Why do plants and animals live in certain places? How does the amount of sunlight
affect different organisms? Write your hypothesis: "If plants and other photosynthetic
organisms need a lot of sunlight, then…..”

2. Test your hypothesis:

3. Experiment:
Select an area to study. Choose one area that receives lots of sunlight and another
that only receives a little sunlight. Mark a 2x2 meter plot in each area with sticks and
strings.

4. Measure:
Measure the air temperature at ground level and 1 meter above ground level in each
area.

5. Record Data:
Using graph paper, record the location of living things in each area. What kind of
organisms do you see?
6. Draw Conclusion:
Compare your observations about the two areas. How does the temperature differ?
Which area contains more living things? Make a statement about the effect of sunlight on
the ecosystem.

7. Compilation:
Compile your work with the following contents:
a. Cover Page
b. Hypothesis
c. Data Recorded
d. Graphing Paper
e. Conclusions
f. Expository Writing
g. Photo Documentation

Expository Writing

Answer the following questions. (Maximum of 50 words)

1. Search for a local environmental problem related to air. How does this problem result from
human activities?

2. Search for an endangered species (Animal or Plant). What factors contribute to the
extinction of this species?
