Refrigerant (R-404A)
Technical Information
New tables of the thermodynamic properties of Freon™ Units and Factors
404A (HP62) refrigerant (ASHRAE designation: R-404A t = Temperature in °F
[44/52/4]), a near azeotropic blend of HFC-125/HFC-
T = Temperature in °R = °F + 459.67
143a/HFC-134a, have been developed and are presented
here. These tables are based on extensive experimental Pf = Pressure of saturated liquid (bubble point) in psia
measurements. Equations have been developed, based on Pg = Pressure of saturated vapor (dew point) in psia
the Peng-Robinson-Stryjek-Vera (PRSV) equation of state, vf = Volume of saturated liquid in ft3/lb
which represent the data with accuracy and consistency
vg = Volume of saturated vapor in ft3/lb
throughout the entire range of temperature, pressure, and
V = Volume of superheated vapor in ft3/lb
density presented in these tables.
df = 1/vf = Density of saturated liquid in lb/ft3
Physical Properties dg = 1/vg = Density of saturated vapor in lb/ft3
Chemical Formula CHF2CF3/CH3CF3/CH2FCF3 hf = Enthalpy of saturated liquid in Btu/lb
(44/52/4% by weight)
hfg = Enthalpy of vaporization in Btu/lb
Molecular Weight 97.60 hg = Enthalpy of saturated vapor in Btu/lb
Boiling Point at –51.62 °F (–46.45 °C) H = Enthalpy of superheated vapor in Btu/lb
One Atmosphere sf = Entropy of saturated liquid in Btu/(lb·°R)
Critical Temperature 161.73 °F (72.077 °C) sg = Entropy of saturated vapor in Btu/(lb·°R)
621.40 °R (345.22 K) S = Entropy of superheated vapor in Btu/(lb·°R)
Critical Pressure 541.2 psia (3731 kPa [abs]) Cp = Heat capacity at constant pressure in Btu/(lb·°R)
Critical Density 30.23 lb/ft3 (484.5 kg/m3) Cv = Heat capacity at constant volume in Btu/(lb·°R)
Critical Volume 0.0331 ft3/lb (0.00206 m3/kg) The gas constant, R = 10.732 (psia·ft3)/(°R·lb-mole) for
Freon™ 404A, R = 0.1100 (psia·ft3)/(lb·°R)
One atmosphere = 14.696 psia
Conversion factor from work units to heat units:
J = 0.185053
Btu/lb = (psia·ft3)/(lb·J)
Reference point for enthalpy and entropy:
hf = 0.0 Btu/lb at -40 °F (-40 °C)
sf = 0.0 Btu/(lb·°R) at -40 °F (-40 °C)
Equations The binary interaction parameters, kij, for Freon™ 404A are:
Conversion Factors (I/P Units to SI Units) k11 = 0.0000 k12 = –0.0111 k13 = –0.0024
k21 = –0.0111 k22 = 0.0000 k23 = 0.0013
The PRSV equation of state was used to calculate the tables
k31 = –0.0024 k32 = 0.0013 k33 = 0.0000
of thermodynamic properties. It was chosen as the preferred
equation of state because it provided an accurate fit of the
Ideal Gas Heat Capacity Equation (At Constant
thermodynamic data over the entire range of temperatures
Pressure)
and pressures presented in these tables. o 3 o
Cp (mixture) = xi Cpi
i=1
The constants for the PRSV equation of state were o
Cpi = 4.184 (Ai + Bi T + Ci T2 + Di T3)
cal-culated in SI units. For conversion of thermodynamic o o
properties to English (I/P) units, conversion factors where Cp and Cpi are in J/(mole·K) and T is in K.
are provided for each property derived from the PRSV xi is the mole fraction of component i in the mixture (use
equation of state. same values listed in PRSV constants for Freon™ 404A).
T is in °R and P is in psia.
A, B, C, and D are constants.
Constants for vapor pressure of saturated liquid (bubble
point), pf:
A = 5.75859 E+01 C = –6.58061 E+00
B = –6.52292 E+03 D = 3.94176 E–06
