Japan Malaysia Technical Institute (JMTI) is an institute that was established with technical
collaboration between the Government of Malaysia and the Government of Japan. JMTI campus is
located in Bukit Minyak Industrial Park, Seberang Perai, Penang.

PROGRAM INTRODUCTION
Logistics and Supply Chain Management is a subject that deals with sourcing raw materials and
components required by companies to manufacture their products. People who work in Logistics focus
on improving the overall performance of the supply chain, to ensure the fastest possible delivery. This
is achieved through efficient planning, which allows enterprises to reduce excess inventory and
storage costs.

Logistics, supply chain and trade industries are increasingly specialised and challenging, with strong
demand for graduates who are business-savvy, sensitive to different cultures, and who have strong
project management and negotiation skills.

This program was designed by JMTI to enhance the career prospect of participants by improving their
knowledge and skills at the workplace or occupation. The program do not have the MQA accreditation.
The main purpose of this programs is to provide opportunity and alternative for those who wish to
continue their studies for career advancement in industries.

This program is developed in line with the 6th National Higher Education Strategic Plan which is to
Encourage Lifelong Learning and the Government's aspiration in Human Capital Development.

Module Synopsis

Module 1 – Management for Organizations


This module introduces students to the principles which underpin organising and organisations. It
charts the structure of work organisations from their inception to more contemporary forms, and uses
traditional dimensions of organizational structure to determine the strengths and limitations these.
The module considers the ways in which organizational design constitutes a means of management
control, and then discusses alternative manifestations of control through culture and organizational
development. The module then explores the concept of organizational development and how,
through the process of change, this can be seen as both a strategic and an operational intervention.

Module 2 – Managerial Communications


This module designed to provide non-native English speakers with a working knowledge of English
techniques and vocabulary that are essential for working in today’s technical workplace. It covers the
core language and skills that students need to communicate successfully in all technical and industrial
specialisations. Technical concepts are clearly presented using motivating texts and clear illustrations,
Topics reflect the latest developments in technology and are relevant to student's needs, The course
uses core language common to a range of specialisations and Grammar is regularly practised and there
is a comprehensive grammar summary section.

Module 3 – Industrial Law


This module Introducing contract law with awareness of key legal requirements for engineering,
including; legal responsibilities, intellectual property, formation of contracts, remedies for breach of
contract and some main insurance law principles such as the duty of good faith and the cover provided
by some specific types of insurance e.g. professional indemnity and contractors all-risks insurance.

Module 4 – Industrial Supervision


In this module we introduce participants to their rights, roles and responsibilities of Supervision and
lay the foundation for upcoming modules in the program. Participants are introduced to exciting topics
that give them a realistic understanding of the rewards and challenges facing the modern supervisor.

Module 5 – Technology and Society


The module will examine the relationship between technology and human society; how technology
influenced the development of society, how society influenced the development of technology, and
how people in society view technology. The module will provide current and historical examples and
information from around the world, since technology, despite the perception of the popular press. In
fact, it is useful to remember that the Industrial Revolution, the first major modern wave of
technology, happened in Great Britain. The module will be of value to students in business and
sociology, and requires no specialized knowledge.

Module 6 – Information Technology for Executives


This Module requires the candidate to have an understanding of some of the main concepts of IT at a
general level. The candidate is required to understand the make-up of a personal computer in terms
of hardware and software and to understand some of the concepts of Information Technology (IT)
such as data storage and memory. The candidate shall also understand how information networks are
used within computing and be aware of the uses of computer-based software applications in everyday
life. The candidate shall appreciate health and safety issues as well as some environmental factors
involved in using computers.

Module 7 – Strategic Project Management
This module will expose the participants on the fundamental of Project Management methodology,
skills and tools. This module walks students through the steps and knowledge needed to properly
manage a project. The learning outcomes of this module are: • Understanding the basic principles of
project management • How to effectively manage a project • The approaches and tools used by
project managers.

Module 8 – Principle of Logistics and Supply Chain Management


Effective development and management of a supply chain network is an invaluable source of
sustainable advantage in today’s turbulent global marketplace, where demand is difficult to predict
and supply chains need to be more flexible as a result. In this module particpants will learn Logistics,
the Supply Chain and Competitive Strategy, Logistics and Customer Value, Measuring Logistics Costs
and Performance, Matching Supply and Demand, Creating the Responsive Supply Chain, Creating a
Sustainable Supply Chain and The Supply Chain of the Future.

Module 9 – Quality Management


This module introduces participants to the fundamental concepts of quality and basic techniques in
quality engineering. The topics covered are measures and interpretation of variation, control charts,
process capability analysis, and acceptance sampling. The module will also deal with some related
issues such as measurement systems analysis, PDCA, TQM, and industrial case studies. At the end of
the module, students will be able to understand the basic concepts of quality and use the basic tools
in quality analysis.

Module 10 – Transportation and Freight Logistics


Freight transportation plays a critical role in any supply chain as it fulfils time and place utility of goods
i.e. delivers products and services to where and when they are required. Significant global changes
(globalisation, civil and social unrests, climatic changes etc) have made major impacts on the logistics
environment thus making proper management of this function a necessity. This module will look into
the important issues in domestic and global transportation which include freight transportation
planning and operations, transportation infrastructure and regulations, selection of freight
transportation carriers and third-party suppliers, freight transportation costing, freight transportation
strategies, and information technology in freight transportation.

Module 11 – Warehouse and Distribution Channels


In this module participants will explore the role of warehousing in a supply chain. The module covers
how a warehouse provides data on inventory levels throughout the supply chain as well as its role in
the preparation and distribution of goods. The module will focus on how a well-run warehouse can
help an organisation to maintain product schedules and avoid supply issues. The module also covers
how distribution channels facilitate the timely delivery of raw materials/inventory to customers.

Module 12 – Operations and Process Management


This module will develop participants competences in analyzing complex issues and an ability to focus
on managerial dilemmas. Many decision-making situations in the student’s future career will challenge
an evaluation of what is relevant and irrelevant. Participants will be introduced to some of the tools
that supply chain and operations managers use to make decisions and to manage the resources and
activities that will ensure the organization can reliably supply the goods and services its customers
want.

Module 13 – Financial Decision Making and Control
Introduction to basic accounting concepts and operating characteristics of accounting systems.
Principles of financial, cost and activity-based accounting, design of accounting systems, techniques
of analysis, and cost control. Emphasis on interpretation and use of accounting for decision making.
Use and benefits of accounting information and its limitations.

Module 14 – Global Supply Chain Management


This module recognises the strategic importance of the activities that occur between the points (and
times) of demand and points of supply. Supply strategies are developed in response to the changing
competitive environment both nationally and internationally. Relevance for the Student of Business
and Management: The world is becoming more and more a global marketplace. Geographical
boundaries are disappearing and the expectation is that managers must be prepared to face the
realities of this new challenge. Managers today must be capable of linking the two concepts of
operations and the supply chain in order to address the fundamental issues of managing flows of
products, services and information, globally and to do so competitively. They must also be capable of
linking analytical and management skills with strategic thinking, whilst taking account of the global
environment.

Module 15 – Procurement Management and Global Sourcing


This module introduces the fields of Procurement Management and Global Sourcing. It explores the
central concepts of organisational procurement and global sourcing. It also explores interfaces of
these to the other areas of an organisation. This module provides opportunities to examine issues
such as organisational procurement process, global sourcing process, supplier selection process,
supplier management and other strategic issues. This module includes a Work Integrated Learning
(WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated
workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your
experience.
