Embracing Technology in the Learning Process- Online Learning

Education is an engine of social mobility and economic growth. In his book, Higher

Education in America, Derek Bok explains how education improves the state of the economy.

Moreover, recent research carried out by IIASA (International Institute for Applied System

Analysis) shows that improvements in economic development can be attributed to the increasing

education levels. There is a need to increase the number of students in every university.

However, the increase in the number of students should not affect the quality of education. The

best way to achieve the increase is through the online classes. It is an effective learning method.

Land is a basic factor of production, but it is limited. The university is spending a

considerable large amount of money on teaching space. Moreover, students have continually

complained about shortages in parking spaces. The demand for the parking space is higher than

the supply, thereby increasing the parking price. To solve all these problems, the university will

embrace online classes. Online classes will reduce the number of students physically in the

university. The university will cut on the cost it has to pay for teaching space. Students do not

have to pay high parking spaces. Online classes will benefit students, as well as, university

management.

The cost of maintaining the university has increased. The government is stressing

increasing the number of students with an aim of improving the human capital. In his book, The

General Theory of Employment, John Maynard Keynes argued that through education a country

acquires human capital. Human capital is the education experience and skills an employee has

that can be used to improve the general economy. It has become expensive to run a university,

and, with people resisting the rise in tax, there is nothing much the government can do. It is up to
the university management to enroll many students and prepare them for the job market. Online

classes will cut the cost of maintaining university. A cost- benefit analysis carried out by a team

of experts shows that the university will reduce cost at the same time increase benefits. It will

reduce the number of employees because one lecturer can teach a large number of students at the

same time. Therefore, online classes will help the university to use limited resources to

maximize on its benefits.

Online education is efficient. A survey carried out by the ministry of education showed

that online students outperformed classroom students. Online learning allows students to review

course materials since they can easily access them. It is a student- centered approach where

students can get a personalized attention. In addition, it is flexible allowing students to attend

classes when it is convenient. The students will greatly benefit from this system. They will

maximize utility because this method provides good results. Moreover, the system is flexible

hence students, as well as, lecturers can attend to other duties.

As the president of the university, I have decided to convert most of the university

undergraduate teaching to online courses. It will benefit the students, lecturers and university. It

will not compromise the quality of education offered instead; it improves the quality by giving

students personalized attention. The university will cut on cost and at the same time enroll more

students, thereby increasing its revenue. With the rise in demand for education, online classes are

the best option.
