DIACONAL ORDINATION
OF

BRO. REYNANTE MIGUEL AZUL LAVADO, OCD

4

The Introductory Rites

Introduction
COMMENTATOR: Good morning brothers and sisters in Christ!

Today we shall witness the reception of

Brother Reynante Miguel Azul Lavado,
OCD into the Order of Deacons. Deacons
are ordained to serve the community in
charity and justice. They assist the bishop
and his body of priests as ministers of the
Word, of the altar, and of charity. They make
themselves servants to all. Since deacons’
primary ministry is one of service, their
actions within the mass, and in all other rites
and celebrations of the Church are hinged on
that diakonia or service.

As ministers of the altar, they proclaim the

Gospel, prepare the sacrifice, and give the
Lord’s Body and Blood to the community of
believers. It is also their duty to preach God’s
Word, to preside over the public prayers, to
baptize, to assist at marriages and bless them,
to give viaticum to the dying, and to lead the
rites of burial. Once they are consecrated by
the laying on of hands that comes to us from
the apostles and are bound more closely to
the altar, they will perform works of charity
in the name of the bishop.
5

Please all rise as we welcome with jubilant

praise the Ordaining Prelate, the Most
Reverend Honesto F. Ongtioco, D.D,
Bishop of Cubao with the concelebrating
priests and the deacon.

Entrance Song and Procession

When everything is ready, the procession moves through the Church to
the altar in the usual way. The one to be ordained precedes the Deacon
who carries the Book of the Gospel, which is to be used during the Mass
and the Ordination. They are followed by other Deacons, if present,
then the concelebrating priests, and finally the Bishop and slightly
behind him, the two Deacons who assist him.

*The procession:
1 thurible,
1 cross,
2 or 4 candles,
book bearer, mi holder,
boat,
Br. Nante and 2 family members,
Deacon who carries the Book,
other deacons,
Concelebrating priests,
Bishop,
MC and mitre holder
Entrance Song: The God of All Grace (Fr. Ricky Manalo,
CSP)

Greetings

BISHOP: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of

the Holy Spirit.

PEOPLE: Amen.
Then the bishop, extending his hands, greets the people saying:
BISHOP: Peace be with you.
PEOPLE: And with your spirit.
Penitential Rite
Then follows the Penitential Act, to which the Bishop invites the faithful, saying:

BISHOP: Brothers and sisters,

let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves
to celebrate the sacred mysteries.
A brief pause for silence follows. Then all recite together the formula of general
confession:

PEOPLE: I confess to Almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to
do,
7

And, striking their breast, they say:

through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
Then they continue:
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever – Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
The absolution by the Bishop follows:
BISHOP: May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
PEOPLE: Amen.

Kyrie (recited) (choir will sing???)

Gloria
Glory to God (Fr. Manuel V. Francisco, SJ))

Collect
The Bishop, with hands joined, says:

BISHOP: Let us pray.

O God, who have taught the ministers of your

Church to seek not to be served
but to serve their brothers and sisters,
grant, we pray, that this your servant,
8

whom you graciously choose today

for the office of Deacon,
may be effective in action, gentle in ministry,
and constant in prayer.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who

lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
PEOPLE: Amen.
*(bring out mitre)

The Liturgy of the Word

FIRST READING Jeremiah 1: 4-9

LECTOR: A reading from the book of the Prophet Jeremiah.

The word of the Lord came to me thus:

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before
you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the
nations I appointed you.

“Ah, Lord, God!” I said, “I know not how to speak; I

am too young.” But the Lord answered me,
Say not, “I am too young.”
To whomever I send you,
you shall speak.
Have no fear before them,
because I am with you to deliver you,
9

says the Lord.

Then the Lord extended his hand and touched my

mouth, saying, “See, I place my words in your
mouth!”

The Word of the Lord

PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 16:1b-2a and 5, 5-

7,11.

℟. You are my inheritance, O Lord.

Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;

I say to the Lord, “My God are you.”
O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup.
You it is who hold fast my lot.

℟. You are my inheritance, O Lord.

I bless the Lord who counsels me;

Even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the Lord ever before me;
With him, at my right hand, I shall not be disturbed.

℟. You are my inheritance, O Lord.

10

You will show me the path of life,

Fullness of joys in your presence,
The delights at your right hand forever.

℟. You are my inheritance, O Lord.

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 9:16-19,22-23

LECTOR: A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul

to the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters:

If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to
boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me,
and woe to me if I do not preach it!

If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if

unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a
stewardship. What then is my recompense?

That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of

charge so as not to make full use of my right in
11

the Gospel.

Although I am free in regard to all, I have made

myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as
possible.

To the weak I became weak, to win over the

weak. I have become all things to all, to save at
least some. All this I do for the sake of the
Gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.

The Word of the Lord.

PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Mark 1:17

℟. Alleluia, Alleluia.
Come after me, says the Lord, and I will make you
fishers of men.
℟. Alleluia, Alleluia.

GOSPEL
Mark 1: 14-20 I will make you fishers of men.

Meanwhile the bishop puts some incense into the thurible. After this,
the Deacon who is to proclaim the Gospel, bowing profoundly before the
Bishop, asks for the blessing, saying in a low voice:

DEACON: Your blessing Father.

12

The Bishop says in a low voice:

BISHOP: May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips,

that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and
well, in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
(+) and of the Holy Spirit.
The Deacon signs himself with the Sign of the Cross and replies:

DEACON: Amen.
*(remove the mitre)
The Deacon then gets the Book of the Gospels from the altar and
proceeds to the ambo. He is accompanied by ministers with incense and
candles. There he says:
DEACON: The Lord be with you.
PEOPLE: And with your spirit.

The Deacon sings or says the Gospel.

DEACON: + A reading from the holy Gospel according to
Mark.
PEOPLE: Glory to you, O Lord.

DEACON: After John had been arrested, Jesus came to

Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is
the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is
at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw

Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets
into the sea; they were fishermen.
13

Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will

make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned
their nets and followed him.

He walked along a little farther and saw James,

the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They
too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he
called them. So they left their father Zebedee in
the boat along with the hired men and followed
him.

The Gospel of the Lord.

PEOPLE: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
*(bring out the mitre)
COMMENTATOR: Please remain standing.

Then the Deacon carries the Book of the Gospels to the Bishop to be
kissed saying quietly

BISHOP: May the words of the Gospel wipe away our

sins.

The Bishop may then impart a blessing to the people with the Book of
the Gospels.

The Deacon places the book of the Gospels back on the Altar, where it
remains until its presentation to the newly ordained.

The ordination of deacon then begins.

14

COMMENTATOR: Please be seated.

We shall now proceed with the calling and election of
the candidate for the Diaconate. He shall be presented
to the Bishop, who will elect him in the name of Jesus
before the Christian Community.

The Rite of Ordination

The Ordination of Deacon begins after the Gospel. The Bishop, wearing
his miter, sits at his chair.

Calling of the Candidate

The candidate is called by another Deacon. (Or Fr. Vito, OCD???)

DEACON: Let BRO. REYNANTE AZUL LAVADO, OCD,

who is to be ordained deacon, come forward.

CANDIDATE: Present.
15

The Candidate goes to the Bishop, to whom he makes a sign of

reverence.

Presentation of the Candidate

When the candidate is in the place before the bishop, the Provincial says

PROVINCIAL: Most Reverend Father,

Holy Mother Church asks you
to ordain this man, our brother,
to the responsibility of the Diaconate.

BISHOP: Do you know him to be worthy?

PROVINCIAL: After inquiry among the Christian people

and upon the recommendation of those
responsible, I testify that he has been found
worthy.
Election by the Bishop and Consent of the People

BISHOP: Relying on the help of the Lord God

and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose this man,
our brother, for the Order of the Diaconate.
PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

COMMENTATOR: Let us show our approval with a round

of applause.

Homily
16

After the Homily, the commentator continues.

COMMENTATOR: Please remain seated.

*(Bring out the chair for Bishop)

Examination of the Elect

The candidate then stands before the bishop, who questions him in these
words.

BISHOP: Dear son, before you enter the Order of the

Diaconate, you must declare before the people
your intentions to undertake this office.

Do you resolve to be consecrated for the

Church’s ministry by the laying on of my hands
and the gift of the Holy Spirit?
ELECT: I do.

BISHOP: Do you resolve to discharge the office of deacon

with humble charity in order to assist the priestly
Order and to benefit the Christian people?
ELECT: I do.

BISHOP: Do you resolve to hold fast to the mystery of

faith with a clear conscience, as the Apostle
urges, and to proclaim this faith in word and
deed according to the Gospel and the Church’s
tradition?
ELECT: I do.
17

BISHOP: Do you resolve to keep forever this commitment

to remain celibate as a sign of your dedication to
Christ the Lord for the sake of the Kingdom of
Heaven, in the service of God and man?
ELECT: I do.

BISHOP: Do you resolve to maintain and deepen a spirit

of prayer that is proper to your way of life and,
in keeping with the spirit and what is required of
you, to celebrate faithfully the Liturgy of the
Hours with and for the People of God and
indeed for the whole world?
ELECT: I do.

BISHOP: Do you resolve to conform your way of life

always to the example of Christ, of whose Body
and Blood you minister at the altar?
ELECT: I do, with the help of God.

Promise of Obedience
Then the candidate goes to the bishop and, kneeling before him, places
his joined hands between those of the bishop.

BISHOP: Do you promise respect and obedience to the

diocesan Bishop and to your legitimate superior?
ELECT: I do.
18

BISHOP: May God who has begun the good work in you
bring it to fulfillment.

Invitation to Prayer
COMMENTATOR: Please rise for the prayer.
*(Get the mitre)
Then all stand, and the bishop, without his miter, with hands joined, he
invites the people to pray.
*(Bring out the kneeler or pillow)
BISHOP: My dear people, let us pray that God - the all-
powerful Father will mercifully pour out the
grace of his blessing on this, His servant, whom
in His kindness He raise to the sacred Order of
the Diaconate.

COMMENTATOR: Please kneel.

outstretched, sings or says

BISHOP: Lord God,

mercifully hear our prayers
and graciously accompany with your help
what we undertake by virtue of our office.
Sanctify by your blessing this man we present,
for in our judgment, we believe him worthy
to exercise sacred ministries.

Through Christ our Lord.

PEOPLE: Amen.

All stand if people are kneeling.

*(Give the mitre to bishop)

COMMENTATOR: We now come to the most solemn part of

the ceremony – the laying on of hands by
the Bishop and the prayer of consecration,
in which the grace of the Holy Spirit is
given to the ordinand, thus enabling him to
serve in the ministry of the Church as
deacon. Let us all remain in prayerful
silence.

Laying on of Hands
The elect rises. He goes to the Bishop, who stands at his chair wearing
the miter, and kneels before him. The bishop lays his hands upon the
head of the elect, without saying anything.
25

*(remove the mitre)

Prayer of Consecration
With the elect kneeling before him, the bishop puts aside the miter, and,
with hands outstretched, he sings or says the Prayer of Ordination.

BISHOP: Draw near, we pray, Almighty God,

giver of every grace,
who apportion every order and assign every
office; who remain unchanged,
but make all things new.
In your eternal providence,
you make provision for every age,
as you order all creation
through him who is your word,
your power and your wisdom,
Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

You grant that the Church, his body,

adorned with manifold heavenly graces,
drawn together in the diversity of its members,
and united by a wondrous bond through the
Holy Spirit, should grow and spread forth
to build up a new temple
and, as once you chose the sons of Levi
to minister in the former tabernacle,
so now you establish three ranks of ministers
in their sacred offices to serve in your name.

And so, in the first days of your Church,

through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,
26

your Son’s Apostles appointed seven men of

good repute to assist them in the daily ministry,
that they might devote themselves more fully
to prayer and preaching of the word.
By prayer and the laying on of hands
they entrusted to those chosen men the ministry
of serving at table.
We beseech you, Lord:
look with favor on this servant of yours
who will minister at your holy altar
and whom we now humbly dedicate to the office
of Deacon.

Send forth upon him, Lord, we pray,

the Holy Spirit,
that he may be strengthened
by the gift of your sevenfold grace
for the faithful carrying out
of the work of the ministry.

May there abound in him every Gospel virtue:

unfeigned love,
concern for the sick and poor,
unassuming authority,
the purity of innocence,
and the observance of spiritual discipline.

May your commandments shine forth in his

conduct, so that by the example of his way of
life he may inspire the imitation of your holy
people. In offering the witness of a clear
27

conscience, may he remain strong and steadfast

in Christ, so that by imitating on earth your Son,
who came not to be served but to serve,
he may be found worthy to reign in heaven with
him, who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever.

Hymn
Great Amen (to be sung)
*(give the mitre to bishop)
Investiture with Stole and Dalmatic
After the Prayer of Ordination, all sit. The Bishop, wearing his miter,
sits, and the newly ordained stand. Some of the assisting deacons or
priests put a deacon’s stole and then a dalmatic on him.

COMMENTATOR: Please be seated. Our newly ordained

deacon will now be invested with signs of
his office – the stole and the dalmatic.

Song: Amare et Servire

*(Bring out the Book of the Gospels)
Handing on of the Book of the Gospels
COMMENTATOR: The newly ordained deacon will now be
entrusted with the Book of the Gospels - the
symbol of his ministry.
28

Vested as deacon, the newly ordained Deacon goes to the Bishop and
kneels before him. The Bishop places the Book of the Gospels in the
hands of the newly ordained Deacon and says

BISHOP: Receive the Gospel of Christ, whose herald

you have become. Believe what you read,
teach what you believe, and practice what
you teach.

Kiss of Peace
COMMENTATOR: The Kiss of Peace is an expression of the
intimate union of deacons with the Bishop
and their collegiality with the Order of
Deacons.

Lastly, the bishop stands and gives the kiss of peace to the new deacons,
saying
BISHOP: Peace be with you.
DEACON: And with your spirit.
*(Remove the chair)
Likewise, all the deacons present, or at least some of them, give the
fraternal kiss to the Newly Ordained.

COMMENTATOR: Let us now welcome our new deacons with

a round of applause.
*(Guide the offerers for offering)
After the applause the commentator continues
29

We will now proceed to the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Liturgy of the Eucharist

*(invite fr. PP to help preparing the altar)

Presentation of the Gifts and

Preparation of the Altar

The bishop, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and
holds it slightly elevated above the altar with both hands, saying in a
low voice

BISHOP: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness, we have received
the bread we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become for us the bread of life.
PEOPLE: Blessed be God for ever.

Then he places the paten with the bread on the corporal. The
preparation of the chalice is omitted since the service deacon has earlier
prepared it.

The bishop takes the chalice and holds it slightly elevated above the altar
with both hands, saying in a low voice

BISHOP: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

30

for through your goodness, we have received

the wine we offer you:
fruit of the earth and work of human hands,
it will become our spiritual drink.
PEOPLE: Blessed be God for ever.

Then he places the chalice on the corporal. After this, the bishop,
bowing profoundly, says quietly
With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be
accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice
in Your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord
God.

Then follows the incensing of the gifts, the bishop, the concelebrating
priests and the people
Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse
me from my sin.

Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and
then joining his hands he says
BISHOP: Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and
yours may be acceptable to God,
the almighty Father.

The people stand up and respond

PEOPLE: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Prayer Over the Offerings

31

Then the Bishop, with hands extended, says the Prayer over the
Offerings.
BISHOP: Holy Father, whose Son chose to wash the
disciples‘ feet and so set us an example,
accept, we pray, the oblation of our service,
and grant that, offering ourselves as a spiritual
sacrifice, we may be filled with a spirit of
humility and zeal.

Through Christ our Lord.

PEOPLE: Amen.

Preface

Eucharistic Prayer III

Then the Bishop begins the Eucharistic Prayer. Extending his hands, he
says,

BISHOP: The Lord be with you.

PEOPLE: And with your spirit.
BISHOP: Lift up your hearts.
32

PEOPLE: We lift them up to the Lord.

BISHOP: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
PEOPLE: It is right and just.
BISHOP: It is truly right and just, our duty and our
salvation, always and everywhere to give you
thanks, Lord, Holy Father, almighty and eternal
God.

For by the anointing of the Holy Spirit

You made your only begotten Son
High Priest of the new and eternal covenant,
And by your wondrous design were pleased to
decree that many ministries be exercised in the
Church.

For Christ not only adorns with a royal

priesthood the people he has made his own,
But with a brother’s kindness, he also chooses
men to become sharers in his sacred ministry
through the laying on of hands.

He chooses them to lead your holy people in

charity, to nourish them with the word
and strengthen them with the Sacraments.

As they give up their lives for you

and for the salvation of their brothers and sisters,
33

they strive to be conformed to the image of

Christ himself and offer you a constant witness
of faith and love.

And so, Lord, with all the Angels and Saints,

we, too, give you thanks, as in exultation we
acclaim:

(Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts …)

Sanctus
COMMENTATOR: Let us all kneel.

The Bishop with hands extended says

BISHOP: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you

have created rightly gives you praise, for
through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
by the power and working of the Holy
Spirit, you give life to all things and make
them holy, and you never cease to gather a
people to yourself, so that from the rising of
the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be
offered to your name.

He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the offerings, says:

Bishop with concelebrants

34

Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore

you:
by the same Spirit graciously make holy
these gifts we have brought to you for
consecration,
He joins his hands and makes the Sign of the Cross once over the bread
and chalice together, saying:

that they may become the Body

and (+) Blood of your Son our Lord Jesus
Christ,

He joins his hands.

at whose command we celebrate these
mysteries.

In the formulas that follow, the words of the Lord should be pronounced
clearly and distinctly, as the nature of these words requires.

For on the night he was betrayed

He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar,
continues:
he himself took bread,
and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing,
broke the bread and gave it to his disciples,
saying:

He bows slightly.
35

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT

OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten
and genuflects in adoration.

After this, he continues:

In a similar way, when supper was ended,
He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar,
continues:
he took the chalice,
and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing,
and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK
FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE
OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND
ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL
BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR
MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF
SINS.

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration.

Then he says:
Bishop alone
36

BISHOP: The mystery of faith.

Anamnesis
We Proclaim Your Death…

Bishop with concelebrants

with hands extended, says:
Therefore, O Lord,
as we celebrate the memorial
of the saving Passion of your Son,
his wondrous Resurrection
and Ascension into heaven,
and as we look forward to his second coming,
we offer you in thanksgiving
this holy and living sacrifice.

Look, we pray,
upon the oblation of your Church
and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim
by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself,
grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and
Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit,
may become one body, one spirit in Christ.

Concelebrant 1
May he make of us
an eternal offering to you,
so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect,
especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary,
37

Mother of God,
with blessed Joseph, her Spouse,
with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs
(with Saint N.: the Saint of the day or Patron Saint)
and with all the Saints,
on whose constant intercession in your presence
we rely for unfailing help.

Concelebrant 2
May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation,
we pray, O Lord,
advance the peace and salvation of all the world.

Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity

your pilgrim Church on earth,
with your servant Francis our Pope and Honesto our
Bishop, with the Order of Bishops,
these your servants,
who have been ordained today as ministers for the
Church,
all the clergy,
and the entire people you have gained for your own.

Listen graciously to the prayers of this family,

whom you have summoned before you:
in your compassion, O merciful Father,
gather to yourself all your children
scattered throughout the world.
† To our departed brothers and sisters
and to all who were pleasing to you
38

at their passing from this life,

give kind admittance to your kingdom.
There we hope to enjoy for ever
the fullness of your glory
He joins his hands.
through Christ our Lord,
through whom you bestow on the world all that is
good.
The bishop and deacon take the chalice and the paten with the host and,
lifting them up, sing or say:
Through him, and with him, and in him,
O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, all glory and honor is yours,
for ever and ever.

The Lord’s Prayer

After the chalice and paten have been set down, the Bishop, with hands
joined, says:
BISHOP: At the Savior’s command and formed by
divine teaching, we dare to say:
39

He extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Then with hands extended, the bishop alone continues alone

BISHOP: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,
graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands.

Doxology
The concelebrating presbyters together with the people end the prayer
with the acclamation:
For the kingdom, the power… (to be sung)

Sign of Peace
40

Then the bishop, with hands extended, says aloud:

BISHOP: Lord Jesus Christ,
who said to your Apostles:
Peace I leave you, my peace I give you;
look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace and unity
in accordance with your will.

He joins his hands.

Who live and reign for ever and ever.
The people reply:

PEOPLE: Amen.
After this, facing the people, he proclaims the greeting of peace
extending and joining his hands, says:
BISHOP: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
PEOPLE: And with your spirit.
DEACON: Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
And all offer one another a sign, in keeping with local customs, that

Breaking of the Bread

41

Then he takes the Host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small
piece in the chalice, saying quietly:
May this mingling of the Body and Blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ
bring eternal life to us who receive it.

Meanwhile the following is sung or said:

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

grant us peace.

The invocation may even be repeated several times if the fraction is

prolonged. Only the final time, however, is grant us peace said.

Then the Bishop, with hands joined, says quietly:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
who, by the will of the Father
and the work of the Holy Spirit,
through your Death gave life to the world,
free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood,
from all my sins and from every evil;
keep me always faithful to your commandments,
and never let me be parted from you.
Or:
42

May the receiving of your Body and Blood,

Lord Jesus Christ,
not bring me to judgment and condemnation,
but through your loving mercy
be for me protection in mind and body
and a healing remedy.

Communion
The Bishop genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised
above the paten or above the chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:
BISHOP: Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the
world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the
Lamb.

And together with the people he adds once:

Lord, I am not worthy
that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.
Facing the altar, the bishop says inaudibly (privately):
BISHOP: May the Body of Christ
keep me safe for eternal life.

Then he reverently consumes the Body of Christ. Then he takes the

chalice and says quietly
43

BISHOP: May the Blood of Christ

keep me safe for eternal life.

He reverently drinks the blood of Christ.

Then the bishop joins his hands and says inaudibly:

BISHOP: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
who, by the will of the Father
and the work of the Holy Spirit,
through your Death gave life to the world,
free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood,
from all my sins and from every evil;
keep me always faithful to your commandments,
and never let me be parted from you.
