I. Introduction

1.1. Background

Wastewater refers to any water that has been used in various human activities and has
become contaminated as a result. This can include water from households, industries, and
agriculture. Wastewater contains a wide range of pollutants, including chemicals, pathogens, and
organic matter, making it unsuitable for direct consumption or release into the environment
without treatment. Wastewater treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater
to make it safe for disposal or reuse. This process typically involves physical, chemical, and
biological treatment methods to remove pollutants and make the water suitable for various
purposes, such as irrigation, industrial processes, or discharge into water bodies.

1.2. Objective

The purpose of this study focusses on:

• Control the wastewater characteristics before, during and after the treatment to control and
make sure the treatment process is adapted.
• Ensure the quality of water after treatment is within the limits as per law or as per the
industry standard.

II. Research Design Parameter

Identify which water quality parameters should be tested before, during and after treatment.
Several parameters need to be tested to ensure that the water meets quality standards for discharge
or reuse.
Table 2.1. According to Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) Water quality testing physical,
chemical, and biological before, during, and after treatments.

Before treatment During treatment (Daily) After treatment

pH (Potential Hydrogen) pH (Potential Hydrogen) pH (Potential Hydrogen)

TDS (Total Suspended Solids) DO (Dissolved Oxygen) TDS (Total Suspended Solids)
Temperature (0C) Temperature (0C)
DO (Dissolved Oxygen) DO (Dissolved Oxygen)
BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand)
COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand)
Oil & grease Oil & grease
Total phosphorus (TP) Total phosphorus (TP)
Total nitrogen (TN) Total nitrogen (TN)
(NH3-N) & (NO3-N) (NH3-N) & (NO3-N)
E. Coli or Fecal Coliforms E. Coli or Fecal Coliforms

*Note: Before treatment, the most important parameters to test are BOD and COD and they can
be tested weekly (or monthly for BOD).

III. Equipment for testing

There are various types of equipment available for testing the essential parameters in
wastewater. Here are some commonly used instruments for monitoring each parameter:
