ASSIGNMENT 1

Answer all the questions in this paper clearly showing all the working

1. By reversing the order of integration, evaluate;

Z 1 Z 2−y Z a Z 2a−x
(a.) xy dxdy (b) 2
xy dydx [5,5]
x
0 y 0 2

2. Determine the volume of the region that lies inside the sphere x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 9 above the plane
z = 0 and inside the cylinder x2 + y 2 = 9. [10]
I
3. Evaluate the integral I = (x2 +y) dx+(y 2 +z) dy+(z 2 +x) dz around the closed curve C consisting
of the line segments; C1 : x + z = 1 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, y = 0) and C2 : x + y = 1 (0 ≤ y ≤ 1, z = 0)
and the quarter circle C3 : y 2 + z 2 = 1, (y ≥ 0, z ≥ 0) in the counter clockwise direction. [10]
4. Verify Green’s theorem in the plane for the function F = (3x2 − 8y 2 )i + (4y − 6xy)j where C is the
bound for the region defined by y = x2 , x = y 2 . [10]

5. Verify the Gauss Divergence Theorem for F = (x2 −yz)i+(y 2 −xz)j+(z 2 −xy)k over the rectangular
prism of length a, width b and height c in the first octant. [10]
6. A colleague of yours has drawn a sketch of a rectangle whose vertices are Λ(−a, 0), Φ(a, 0), Γ(a, b)
and Ω(−a, b). If a vector field F = (x2 + y 2 )i − 2xyj traces a similar path in the counter-clockwise
direction, Verify Stoke’s theorem for the given vector field tracing out the given rectangle. [10]
