Lab 3 –Pressure dependent control and time-

delay valve
Name : Date :

Regd-No :

OBJECTIVES:
1. To use pressure sequence valve to control the cylinder operation based on a preset pressure. [CLO4]
2. To use time-delay valve to add delays in the cylinder actuation. [CLO4]
3. To perform the experiment in a team. [CLO8]

APPARATUS:
Compressor, Service unit, manifold, 3/2 way push button valve, 3/2 roller lever valve, double acting cylinder, 5/2
way directional control valve, pressure sequence valve, time-delay valve.

Pressure Dependent Control
A pressure sequence valve is used to implement pressure dependent control of actuators. The pressure pre-set can be
adjusted to control the pressure at which the sequence valve is actuated. The response pressure set on the pressure
sequence valve must be lower than the system pressure to ensure reliable switching.

A plastic component is embossed using a die powered by a double acting

cylinder. The return of the die is to effect when the cylinder rod has fully
extended to embossing position and the preset pressure is reached. A roller
lever valve is to be used to confirm full extension. The signal for retracting
must only be generated when the piston rod has reached the embossing
position. The pressure in the piston chamber is indicated by a pressure
gauge.

Task 1:
1. Draw the circuit diagram for the problem
2. Designate the valves and indicate the numbering system for the
connections (ports). Figure 3.1: A plastic embossing machine setup
3. Attach the pneumatic components to the trainer as described by
the instructor and describe what happens when you actuate the control valves

2. Working:

The time delay valve

Time delay valves are used to add delays in either actuation or the retraction of the cylinder. This allows for better
control in many applications where clamping is required.
A double -acting cylinder is used to press together glued components. Upon operation of a push button, the clamping
cylinder extends.
Once the fully advanced position is reached, the cylinder is to remain for a time of T=6 seconds and then immediately
retract to the initial position. A new start cycle is only possible after the cylinder has fully retracted.

Task 2:
1. Draw the circuit diagram for the problem
2. Designate the valves and indicate the numbering system for the connections (ports).
3. Attach the pneumatic components to the trainer as described by the instructor and describe what happens
when you actuate the control valve.

Review Question 2: Redo the circuit diagram for task 2, with a change that the new cycle can only be made
possible when the cylinder has fully retracted and after a delay of 5 seconds (you’d have to use a second
time-delay valve).
