Part II
1. The ancient city of Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka dating back to 3rd century
BCE. According to the historians, it was one of the greatest cities in the ancient world. In
993 AD, the city was abandoned after an invasion.

The ruins of the city, the ancient texts and the reports of the archaeologists prove that most of
its monuments were built using materials such as bricks, wood and granite. The following
pictures show the state of the city when the archaeologists started restoration.

(i) The archaeological records state that some of the stone structures and statues were badly
weathered when they were discovered. Explain what is rock weathering.

2. Read the following statements and mark ‘T’ (true) or ‘F’ (false) in the blank.

(i) Igneous rocks can have different sizes of mineral crystals. The size of the
crystals depend on the time taken for cooling of magma during rock
formation. ( )
(ii) Metamorphic rocks are more porous than sedimentary rocks. ( )
(iii) Limestone can be easily weathered by acid rains. ( )
(iv) The pH level of acid rain can be measured by using litmus indicator. ( )
(v) If the acidity of the acid rain was pH 4, it would give yellow colour in the
universal indicator. ( )
(vi) Limestone is used to make lime. Lime is an acidic substance. ( )
(vii) When lime is added to an acidic soil, the pH of the soil increases. ( )
