Philosophy in education is important because it allows teachers to make decisions for

their classroom and turn it into their own. It lets teachers design their classrooms and decide how

to teach their courses. Teachers need to be able to decide how to teach their own courses because

every student learns in their own way. Teachers have to teach around their students' needs so

their students learn effectively.

Lori’s philosophy is all about relevant learning, engaging learning, and making

connections with students. When I walk into Lori’s class, I am always greeted by my first name.

She also asks me questions that we can relate with each other about. While being in Lori’s class,

I love how we apply what we are learning to real life situations. It makes me think about the

topic in different ways and makes me think more critically about it. I also love how Lori makes

her class very engaging. Lori makes sure we move around and do not sit at our desk the whole

time in class, which helps me stay focused.

Julianne’s is all about relevant learning, applying learning to careers, being fun and

positive, and creating a welcoming environment. When I walk into Julianne’s class, I am always

greeted with a smile and a “Good morning, Delaney!” This makes me feel so welcomed and it

makes me excited for class. I love how our learning helps us prepare to become a teacher.

Julianne makes our learning relevant by talking about real life situations and she provides so

many helpful tips for the teaching career.

John Locke was born in 1632 and died in 1704. His educational philosophy came mainly

from letters sent to a friend concerning the education his children received. John believed that the
purpose of education was to hold children to high standards and that children should learn in self

control. He saw children as selfish and willing to learn only about what interests them. Overall,

John Locke thought that education was too focused on the students behavior in society when it

should focus on students finding their interests.

John Dewey was born in 1859 and died in 1952. His philosophy formed throughout his

life and influenced people all over the world. John did not like child centered approaches in the

classroom. John Dewey’s educational philosophy was similar to John Locke’s because he wanted

the curriculum to be about things that interested the children, not past established knowledge.

Overall, John believed that traditional subjects were important, but he wanted the subjects to be

taught with the students strengths and interests.

Nel Noddings was born in 1929 and died in 2022. I agree with Nel Noddings the most

because she believed that the most important part about education and teaching is showing the

students that you care. I also think her philosophy is most up to date with education today. She

thought that the strength of students and teachers' relationship was vital in education. Nel ended

up being a professor at Stanford and was the director of STEP. She thought it was important for

school to be a place where students explore beyond the standard curriculum. Overall, Nel

Noddings educational philosophy was that students and teachers should have a strong,

meaningful, and caring relationship.

Researching and reading about educational philosophers from different times has helped

me form my own philosophy. I think the most important part about teaching is making sure you
create a safe and welcoming environment where students want to be. I expect my students to

come to school and give their best effort. Making my classroom a safe place for them will help

them feel comfortable working and hopefully motivate them to try their best. At the beginning of

the year, I want to learn their names as fast as possible and make connections with them. I think

it is important to make connections and have a strong relationship with your students because

that shows them you care about them. Teaching my students the curriculum is important, but I

want to make a positive and lifelong impact on my students. Overall, I want to be a fun and

positive teacher with a welcoming classroom that students want to be in.

I learned a lot from researching educational philosophers. I enjoyed learning about their

stance on education and what is important to involve in your curriculum. Researching these

philosophers made me think about education in a different way. Doing this assignment helped me

narrow down what I think is most important for a teacher to include in their classroom and

curriculum. Overall, this assignment will help me become a better future teacher because it

helped me create my own philosophy.
