Diversity and Inclusion in Workplace

Diversity is who we are, and Inclusion is what we do. In an Organization, Diversity

will be measured through percentages, graphs, or matrices and will be balanced by
unconscious bias trainings etc., but there is no medium that can eradicate ‘diversity’
than in our minds.

Diversity is a culture which cannot be pinpointed only to race, or gender and is only
effective when interwoven with inclusiveness.

Everyone experiences diversity in one form or other, a child who is not selected in the
game would feel that he is not athletic or strong enough, a person not selected in a
dance or a play because of the way they look or talk, a woman rejected from a beauty
pageant, an individual not getting a job because of the background, all these and many
more are the effects of diversity. Any kind of exclusion can make us feel that way.

Workplace diversity is crucial for the growth and success of the individual and its
Organization. With the world being in so much closer proximity, it would be
inappropriate to not have awareness and focus on the inclusiveness.

The strategy for inclusiveness is,

Employees are treated with Respect;
Employees are valued for their strength and
Leaders do what is right

The efficacy of the above will go a long way. A well formulated plan grounded on the
above strategy can resolve business and culture issues in a work environment.

To sum up, Diversity is like asking a person to a dance and Inclusiveness is making sure
that the person is not only invited to the dance floor but is also dancing with the others.
