Similarly, any advancement in technology may make the existing products obsolete. Therefore, it is
essential to have a clear comprehension of the basic idea of business environment and its various
components. Business Environment is the sum of all the internal and external factors that influence
the functioning of a company, directly or indirectly. These factors include employees, customer’s
needs and expectations; supply and demand; management; clients; suppliers; owners; government
activities; innovation in technology; social trends; market trends; economic changes; etc. The sum of
all these factors influences the environment and situation of companies or business organisations.

Business environment refers to the forces within and around a business firm that determine its
performance, growth and continuity. These forces, known as environmental factors, present a variety
of challenges and opportunities for business firms, especially when it comes to the forces of the
external environment. These forces (e.g. political, legislative, economic, infrastructure, social,
cultural, demographic, religious and technological and security) are largely beyond the control and
limitations of an organization. On the other hand, the forces within the organization (e.g., the
company itself, customers, vendors, intermediaries, shareholders, financial intermediaries and the
public) can be somewhat controlled and amenable to the organization’s strengths while minimizing
the weaknesses caused by these forces. These forces can best be analyzed in conjunction with
business performance using SWOT analysis.

Therefore companies should adapt strategies, which will adequately guide them on how to act and
behave in a competitive environment. Firms ought to observe the market movements, their customers
and competitors’ behaviors in order to be able to reply to fast changing circumstances and formulate
