Flying Saw vs. Cross Cutter / Rotary Knife
Differentiation between Cross Cutter/Rotary Knife and Flying Saw

Cross Cutter Flying Saw

• Also called: Rotary Knife, Flying Knife, Rotary • Also called: Flying Knife – Flying Shear etc.
Scissors, Flying Shear, Guillotine, etc. • Linear system
• Rotary system

There are different application examples available, depending on the mechanical system (rotary or linear) you need to select
the right one. The terms for the application are often mixed up.

and details

Flying Saw
realizable applications – 1. linear sledge

Saw drive is moving in the same direction as the material (moving in parallel). The drive synchronizes to the speed of the material, cuts
the material and moves back to the starting point. The cut can be done by a knife or saw. The control of the cutting motion (saw/knife)
is not part of this application.

vSaw = vMat

Flying Saw
realizable applications – 2. diagonal sledge

Saw drive is moving with a fixed mechanical angle

𝜑𝜑 over the material and cuts it from one side to the
other. The cut is always vertical to the material. The
control of the cutting motion (saw/knife) is not part
of this application.

Flying Saw
Functionality

The flying saw applications typically include the following technology specific* functions:
• Measuring wheel correction (for fine adjustment of the material length)
• Mode for non-specified format length
• Software limit switch
• Hardware limit switch
• Creating a gap
• Positioning
• Single, Test and Continuous cutting (on material position or immediate)
• Print mark correction for the material position (on leading axis side)
• Speed and torque pre control
• Absolute physical units (mm) with adjustable fine resolution

* additional standard functions like jogging etc. are available

Typical issues with
the flying saw

Unrestricted © Siemens 2021

Flying Saw
Common questions – typical problems

Parameterization of the mechanical system

Leading value (measuring wheel or speed controlled drive):

• Any inaccuracy in the set mechanic (diameter, gear ratio) leads to a repeated length
error in the cut material length

Flying Saw
• Any inaccuracy in the set mechanic (diameters, gear ratio, spindle pitch) leads to a
repeated length error in the cut material length

• Project assistant based on Excel available • Systems with three encoders (motor encoder, knife
encoder and measuring wheel encoder) on one
drive object cannot be implemented at the moment
