CLOTHING- (also known as clothes, apparel, and
attire)
are items worn on the body.
clothing is made of fabrics or textiles, but over
time it has included garments made from
animal skin and other thin sheets of materials
and natural products found in the
environment, put together.
The wearing of clothing is mostly restricted to
human beings and is a feature of all human
societies.
The amount and type of clothing worn
depends on gender, body type, social
factors, and geographic considerations.
Garments cover the body, footwear covers
the feet, gloves cover the hands, while hats
and headgear cover the head. Eyewear and
jewelry are not generally considered items
of clothing, but play an important role in
fashion and clothing as costume.

GRAY HAIR
The gray-haired woman has a much larger choice
of colors than most people realize. She can wear
warm greens, blues and reds, violets, and dark
blue-grays. An all-gray dresshowever, makes gray
hair look drab.
RED HAIR
A lovely redhead is less dramatic in copper-
color than in a bright contrasting color.
Greens, medium blue, soft grays, and rich
brawns are the best.
BLOND HAIR
Blonds should never choose harsh strong colors,
and they should shun yellow and orange. They can
wear all shades of blue and the darker shades of
purple, Blue violet is better than red violet.
BLACK / WHITE HAIR
Any color is good with black or white hair,

Choosing Clothes According to
Personality

Your personality should

be the governing factor
in choosing the type of
clothes you wear.
Tailored Type

The "tailored type" can wear tailored

clothes for both day and evening, avoid
flowery, frilly garments, and can wear all
versions of shirtwaist dresses.
Tailored Type
Feminine Type

Experiment with elaborate dresses, but

avoid veiling and fancy accessories for
overdressing. Keep glamour styles for
evening wear, while daytime wear
features graceful lines and soft fabrics
with detail, pastel colors, and lace jabots.
Feminine Type
Sophisticated Dramatic Type

Select striking colors and designs. Wear

new and un- usual costumes and bold
color combinations. Don't be afraid to be
daring in your selections. Choose
outstanding trimmings and accessories.

Determining Your Face Shape
ROUND SHAPE
Fedora
Fedoras are often associated
with a classic, sophisticated, and
sometimes retro look. They were
particularly fashionable in the
mid-20th century and have seen
periodic revivals in popularity.
Fedoras are versatile and can be
worn in both casual and formal
settings, depending on the
materials and styling.
Newsboy
The newsboy cap – also known
as a paperboy cap, newsie cap
or newsy – was first worn in the
late 1800s and early 1900s by
newspaper sellers. It's similar to
a flat cap in that both are
typically constructed from tweed
and have a rounded, low profile
and a small visor or brim.
Baseball Cap
A baseball cap is a soft cap with
a rounded crown and a stiff
front brim. It typically has six
fabric panels and may feature
an adjustable strap at the back.
Originally worn in baseball, it
has become a popular casual
headwear item with various
styles and designs.
OBLONG SHAPE
Sunhat
A sunhat is a wide-brimmed hat
designed to provide shade and
protection from the sun. It typically
features a broad brim that extends all
around the hat, shielding the face, neck,
and shoulders from sunlight. Sunhats
are commonly worn in outdoor settings,
such as at the beach, while gardening,
or during other activities where sun
protection is important
CLOCHE
A cloche hat is a close-fitting, bell-shaped
hat with a deep, rounded crown and a
relatively small brim. It was a popular
women's fashion accessory in the 1920s
and 1930s. The term "cloche" is French for
"bell," which reflects the hat's distinctive
shape. Cloche hats were often made of felt
and designed to be worn low on the
forehead, emphasizing a chic and close-
fitting style. They are a notable fashion
symbol of the Art Deco era.
Fedora
HEART SHAPE
FEDORA WTH A MEDIUM SIZE BRIM

A Fedora with a medium-sized brim

typically refers to a style of Fedora hat
where the brim is neither very wide
nor very narrow—falling somewhere
in the middle in terms of width. The
Fedora itself is characterized by its
soft felt construction, a pinched front
on the crown, and a brim that can
vary in width.
BOATER
A boater hat, also known simply as a
boater, is a type of straw hat that is
typically made of stiff sennit straw
and has a flat crown and a flat, rigid
brim. Boater hats are easily
recognizable by their distinctive and
formal appearance. They often
feature a wide grosgrain ribbon band
around the crown and a flat top.
Boaters were popular in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries, especially
during the summer months.
SQUARE SHAPE
Cowboy Hat
A cowboy hat is a distinctively
styled hat associated with the
American cowboy and Western
culture. It features a high crown, a
wide brim often turned up at the
sides, and a crease down the center.
Made of materials like felt or straw,
it provides protection from the sun
and elements, symbolizing the
cowboy lifestyle.
Homburg Hat
A Homburg hat is a formal men's
hat with a stiff felt construction, a
center dent in the crown, a
moderately wide brim, and a
grosgrain ribbon band. It is known
for its classic and sophisticated
appearance, often worn on formal
occasions as an alternative to the
top hat.
Triangle Shape
A triangle face is like an
oval face shape that the
options are virtually
endless when it comes to a
hat.
Oval Shape
You are blessed with a
very versatile look! Pick up
whatever suits your mood,
as long as the hat is in
harmony with your outfit.
Women with oval faces can
top off any hat.

Figure Types

Figure in garment construction means

the body shape or an outline of an
individual.
Body form differs from one person to
another.
As a result in designing clothes, these
figures can be viewed from horizontal
and vertical body shapes
Horizontal Body Types

The horizontal body types are

hourglass, inverted triangle,
triangle, rectangle, diamond and
oval.
The horizontal body types are
important for designing clothing
articles and combining the
elements of designs to create
varying styles.
Horizontal Figure
Vertical figure

Vertical figure types are based on the proportion

of the bottom half of the body compared to the
top half.
They include: short legs and long torso, balanced
body and long legs and short body.
Some people have figure faults that need to be
concealed with suitable colours and pattern.
Therefore, a good knowledge of dress sense
would enhance fittings and appearance.

BASIC BODY FORMS

There are nine basic body forms and shapes which

every human being belongs.
1. Girls: This is just beginning to develop, the bust is not
yet defined.
2. Chubby: This figure type is for growing girl which is
over the average weight of her age
and height.
3. Junior: This has a well-developed figure that is
slightly shorter than the misses.
4. Miss petite: This has a well-developed figure as
misses but shorter than misses.
Detailed Figure Problems
Neckline
If your neck is thin, soften theeffect with fine finishing details at
the neckline. Soft net or ruffled edgings, full collars in rich fabrics,
and bright colors are good. In your coat, a long-haired fur collar
is the solution. If your neck is too stout, never use any but the
simplest finishing details. Wear a V-neck when- ever possible
and avoid all rich fabrics or long- haired furs against the throat.

Thin Neck Stout Neck

Narrow or Sloping Shoulders
Never wear raglan or dolman sleeves unless there is some padding in the
shoulders to make them look square; and this is only possible if you are
above average height and have a small or medium bust. If you are short and
have a large bust, avoid this kind of sleeve entirely. The square padded
shoulder line is the most effec- tive disguise for narrow or sloping shoulders.
Bright-colored yokes and neckwear, or horizontal trimming lines across the
shoulders will help.
Broad or Square Shoulders
Garments with padded square shoulders and tight sleeves
should be avoided. Raglan, dolman, and full sleeves will
soften the shoulder line. Any contrasting vertical lines in
neckwear or other trimming will be attractive.
Flat Chest
A flat-chested figure requires soft front treatments in all
garments. Gathers and tucks and horizontal lines above
the waist are becoming, and ruffled jabots or long frilly
collars are a good choice.
FULL BUST
Vertical and diagonal lines minimize a full bust. Tucks
from the shoulder, and vests and scarves in contrasting
color are helpful. A full-busted figure should never
appear in a tightly fitted skirt or blouse, or in raglan or
dolman sleeves.
LARGE WAISTLINE
A large waistline can be minimized by carrying the lines through
the full length of the garment. Never break the lines of the dress at
the waistline. Narrow matching belts are the only kind that can be
successfully worn.
SMALL WAISTLINE
The full high waisted dirndl, peplums, broad belts in bright
contrasting colors, broad bands of color set in at the waistline,
two-tone garments with color division at the waist, any horizontal
line or trimming at the waist all these will be becoming.
THIN OR HEAVY ARMS
In either case, avoid tight sleeves. Any soft
treatment is preferable

EMPASIZING Problems
YOU GOOD POINTS
Well-sharped arms and throats should be em-
phaşized by trìmming details which will set them
of. Lace edgings, contrasing bindings, sTmart
jewelry, and tight sleeves will help focus attention.
Well-shaped legs should be dramatized by
decorative hems or contrasting trimming bands at
the edge of the skirt. The petticont rale sewn under
tailored skirt hems is designed for this. The older
woman should never wear very low necklines, and
her skirts should always fall three inches below the
knee even when shorter skirls are in fashion.
