Marriage is designed by God for companionship and intimacy. It is also an
instinct culture of union between a man and a woman directed toward building a family,
the basic unit in the society. In the government context, it is purposely arranged,
publicly announced, and proudly organized by the couple themselves. In some
context, there are marriages which are culturally arranged (by parents), legendarily
driven (patterned after an ideal marriage of a great king or noble people), or globally
fashioned (accepted by society). No matter what has driven marriage, whether it is
based on culture or trend in the society, what is important is the quality life one spends
with his family. Family really plays a vital role in forming the child’s awareness and
values formation. The idea of giving a great importance in making the children joyful
and fulfilled, putting a great value in supporting all the needs and desires of the
children, without compromising a meaningful and fruitful time together, is all that
matters. This is responsible parenthood. It provides guidance in improving one’s
personality in order to become more productive and useful citizens of the country.
Education then plays an important role in obtaining a happy and fulfilled
marriage. It changes the mindset, develops a good concept, trains an established
pattern of marriage, and develops a habit of better living. Though there is no perfect
marriage, but healthy marriage and building a fulfilled family can be learned and
eventually, worked out with.
This module is designed for you to have a better understanding on the
development of a successful marriage, maternal care, the proper care before, during,
and after pregnancy, and the preparations of a responsible parenthood for a healthy
and fulfilled family life.

NEWBORN--It means a child from the time of complete delivery to 30 days old.
NEWBORN SCREENING (NBS)—is a simple procedure to find out if the baby has a
congenital metabolic disorder that may lead to mental retardation or even death if left
untreated.
Importance of Newborn Screening
Most babies with metabolic disorders look “normal” at birth. By doing NBS,
metabolic disorders may be detected even before clinical signs and symptoms are
present. And as a result, treatment can be given early to prevent consequences of
untreated conditions. R.A. 9288 promulgates a comprehensive policy and a national
system for ensuring newborn screening for every child in the Philippines.
