Welcome to Health Grade 6 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Community Health


Resources and Facilities.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of

What is It

Health professionals are qualified


persons who deliver proper health care in a
systematic and professional way to any
individual in need of health care services. Health
care providers may refer to the health
professionals or organizations that provide
professional health services. Professionals are
regulated by their body and/or the state.

Medical Professionals/Practitioners are health


professionals – doctors, nurses, dentists, etc. –
who provide the preventive, curative,
promotional, or rehabilitative services to people, families, or communities. Some of
them hold private clinics in your community. Others are found in the health centers
or in hospitals. They provide informal counseling, health screenings and referrals
and promote access to services, health education and advocacy.
It is important to have regular check-up with the health professionals/
workers to help find potential health issues before they become a problem. The doctor
is able to detect health conditions or diseases early. Early detection gives you the
best chance for getting the right treatment quickly, avoiding any complications.

Health Facilities include


government hospitals, private
hospitals and primary health care
facilities. Local government units
(LGUs) have hospitals and health
centers which offer health programs
and services to the public.

School Clinic usually provides


health services to their pupils/
students. They usually have regular
health service personnel in the school clinic
– school nurse, dentist and doctor. The
school dentist and doctor may not be there
on daily basis but they hold regular
schedule in the school clinic.

Barangay Health Station/ Rural
Health Units are health care facilities
found in barangays that you can avail of
regarding your personal issues and
concerns especially when you are not in
school.

These are health specialists that provide proper health care


to the people who need health care services:

Obstetrician – specialist in
caring for mothers before,
during and immediately
after giving.

Gynecologist – specialist in
women’s conditions and
diseases, especially of the
female reproductive system.

Pediatrician – specialist in
health and illness of
children.

Ophthalmologist –
specialist in treating eye
conditions and diseases.

Neurologist – specialist in
diagnosing and treating
disorders of the nervous
system.

Psychiatrist – specialist in
the treatment of mental and
emotional conditions and
disorders.

Gerontologist – specialist
for the aged and elderly.

Surgeon – performs surgical
related cases.

Nephrologist – specialist
in the disorder of the
kidney.

Podiatrist – specialist in
various feet related
diseases.

Dentist – specialist in
