4. Surface Preparation:
a. Before the application of any protective treatment, all of the surfaces which are to be
coated shall be cleaned to remove all traces of grease, dust, dirt and other foreign
materials. All other sharp projection of the surfaces shall be ground smooth prior to blast
cleaning. All surfaces shall be well cured, uniform with no visible cracks and blow holes.
b. By abrasive blasting, remove all laitance and open up bottle neck of holes near the
surface.
c. Grind and cut any protrusion and ridges.
d. The time interval between blasting and coating shall not exceed three hours. In such
cases, re blasting is mandatory.
e. Hand tool or power tool can be used where blasting is impractical or undesirable.
f. Site shall be barricaded with vinyl sheet in order to protect other working area from
contamination of dust and dirt.
g. Operation of blasting shall be carried out by skilled craftsman.
h. Surface profile required shall be 50 ~ 100 microns.

5. General Points:

5.1 Weather conditions:

Paint shall not be applied on the surfaces when:
• The surrounding atmospheric temperature is below 4 0C.
• The surface temperature is less than 30C above dew point.
• The relative humidity is above 85%.
• The Wind velocity is such that the dust and dirt may be deposited in the wet paint.
• The surface temperature is beyond the limits specified in manufacturer's instruction.
• The surfaces are wet or damp from water or condensation.

6. Preparation for Application.

Before application of paint, the following items shall be checked and confirmed.

• Confirm the painting area after surface preparation.

• Storage of paint material should be as per the recommendation in the

manufacturer product data sheet.
• Check product name, Lot No, Date of manufacturing and expiry date.
• Paint shall be thoroughly mixed immediately before application. Mixing shall
preferably be done by mechanical stirrers, paddle mixers, Can vibrator, or Can
shakers.
• Check the atmospheric temperature /condition while mixing.

7. Paint material specification:

SABIC Coating Standard SES –PCS 2 with a DFT of 500 microns.

• Primer coat : High solid epoxy, amine cured, 250 Microns
• Top coat : High solid epoxy, amine cured, 250 Microns

8. Painting Procedure
• Prior to the paint application, above para 4,5 & 6 shall be followed all the time
and make sure the surface is ready for coating.
• Contrasting colors shall be used for each inner coat. & recoating interval shall
be follow as per paint manufacturer data sheet.
• Application shall be airless spray system and spray nozzle tip shall be selected
as per paint manufacturer data sheet.
• Roller brush is not recommended for coating at larger areas but areas like
welding joints. cannot be covered with airless spray shall be strip coated with
roller brush prior to the air less spray application.
• Each coat shall be applied uniformly over the entire surface. Skips, runs, sags,
drips etc. shall be avoided. Each coat shall be free from pin holes, blister and
holidays
• Contamination of painted surface between coats shall be avoided and removed
if any.
• Curing time of paint shall be maintained between each coat based on
manufacturer paint data sheet and ambient temperature.
• Gently rub the coated surface with a light emery paper after the complete curing
of each coat and clean the surface with air blowing.

• Inspection shall be carried out after each coat.
• Gauges, name plate, cables etc. near by the piping/equipment to be coated shall
be covered before starting spray painting.
Precaution:
• "Wet paint" signs shall be posted around the area where readily visible, until the
paint has completely dried.
• Open flames, smoking, exposed heating elements or source of ignition shall be
prohibited in areas where painting is being performed.
• During painting work, welding or open flame shall be prohibited in adjacent
areas

9. Inspection.
9.1 Inspection for Blasting.
• Entire blasted surface shall be Checked to make sure that the blasted surface is
in conformance to the specified surface preparation (SA 2.5) by using Profile
gauge. Profile shall be 50 ~ 100 microns.

9.2 Inspection for Painting

1. Wet film thickness (WFT) - To ensure correct film thickness is obtained.

2. Dry film Thickness (DFT) -DFT shall be taken on every coat to ensure the specified
thickness of each is being obtained. Required DFT shall be defined in the job specification.

2. Visual Inspection.
Generally, a clear visual inspection should be done after each application and also
after application of final coat. The following items may be checked by visual inspection.

• Pin holes or holidays.

• Mud Cracking
• Inclusion and cleanliness
• Mechanical damage
• Runs and sags
• Dry spray/over spray

• Visual standards of SSPC

• Wet film thickness gauge
• Dry film thickness gauge
• Dew point meter.
• Profile gauge
• Chloride Test Kit
