Question: Consider the function, . Do the following

● Plot the function using a scatter chart

● Calculate the slope of the curve at

Solution:

Step 1: Draw up the spreadsheet with the values for y against values of x at equally spaced intervals. Enter
“x” in B2 cell and values from B3 to B7 cells, apply formula in C3 cell “=2*B3*B3+3” and autofill.

Step 2: Select table, then Click Insert tab > Charts group > Scatter drop-down > Scatter with Smooth Lines
and Markers option.

Now we must calculate the slope at x=3. So, we take points away from x=3 and calculate the slope of the
point from x=3.

Step 3: Enter “Slope from x=3” in D2 cell. Draw up the points of the curve away from x=3 in B3 to B8 cell.
Apply formula in C3 cell as “=2*B3*B3+3”. Use the Autofill feature to copy the formula.

Step 4: Calculate the slopes of the lines joining the above points with the point (3,f(3)) i.e,(3,21). Use the
Autofill feature to copy the formula.

Looks like the slope is approximately 12. So, Slope of the curve at x=3 is 12.
