Variables of the Study

The variables of the study refer to the logical grouping of

attributes1. In identifying these variables, the researchers are

then able to clearly present and justify the relationships among

them and eventually use the proper analytical tools to achieve

the objectives of the study.

Variables either are the primary quantities of interest or

act as practical substitutes for the same. The importance of

variables is that they help in operationalization of concepts for

data collection.2

There are two main types of variables. We have the

independent and dependent variables.

Independent Variable

The independent variables are those considered to be the

antecedent variable. In other terms, they are considered to be

the experimenter or the variables influencing the dependent

variables.

In this particular study the independent variables

identified by the researchers are as follows.

Socio-Demographic Profile. The respondents’ year level,

age, gender, and other personal details are obviously independent

of whatever tests or researchers that will be conducted. And in

turn they can be considered causes for variation of the results

or that of the dependent variables.

For instance, in this study, the impact of the social and

emotional life of students to their academic performance

generally varies among males and females, or there could be

greater impact on nursing students who are freshmen compared to

senior students.

These socio-demographic profiles would remain constant

throughout the study and would not be reliant on any other

variable.

Social and Emotional Life. Though this variable can also be

considered as dependent variable, being the result of different

psycho-social behavioral patterns across various demographics,

this is also considered by the researchers as an independent

variable as well.

As the study is aiming to look into the impact of social and

emotional life of nursing students amid pandemic, clearly this

variable is an antecedent driving towards the impact being

studied making it qualified to be considered an independent

variable.
Pandemic. the timeframe “amid pandemic” is specific and

exclusive and therefore would remain constant. Time is a common

independent variable, as it will not be affected by any dependent

environmental inputs.3
