In 2025, Osaka will host the World Expo with the theme
"Designing Future Society for Our Lives." The Kansai area, including Osaka,
has long been producing a wide range of items, from household goods to parts
for artificial satellites, thanks to its traditional techniques cultivated over many
years and innovative ideas. It is characteristic of this region that many of the
companies constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation are
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
We’re sure the World Expo, between the technologies, ideas from all over the
world, and local companies, will allow for the creation of incredible things! Below,
we introduce SMEs from Osaka that have appeared in YouTube videos and are
creating unique and innovative products. Please take a look at their new ideas
and technologies that not only enrich our daily lives but are also environmentally
friendly.

This towel is designed to resist color fading and
provide durability during washing, compared to
traditional plant-based dyeing, and can be used
for various purposes. Colors from various parts
of locally grown vegetables in South Osaka, such
as eggplant, Senshu onions, Matsunami cabbage,
basil, and more, are selected and extracted to
create the dye. Unlike traditional plant-based
dyeing, these towels are free from bleach, fluores-
cent brighteners, and softeners, making them less
likely to fade during washing and more durable.
Fukuroya Towel takes great pride in their unique
towel-making process that blends traditional
techniques with outstanding absorbency.
Founded in 1926, this manufacturing company
has a long-standing reputation in the Senshu
towel manufacturing industry, renowned for
introducing the innovative technique of ‘bag
weaving,’ a technique that weaves text and pat-
terns into towels. To distinguish themselves
from their competitors, they have also ventured
into developing original new products. They’ve
achieved success in crowdfunding campaigns for
their NOKORI-FUKU series, which is dyed using
leftovers from Kawauchi wine, Osaka craft beer,
and Sakai matcha.

Nakagawa Tekkou was founded in 1917 in Osaka’s
Aioi-cho, Kita-ku, near Osaka Castle. The cur-
rent owner, Yuzo Nakagawa, represents the 5th
generation of the business. From the very begin-
ning, they have been dedicated to the art of metal
turning and machining, and have utilized their
expertise in shaping and thinning metal to bring
the design of Shitatari to life. Originally a manu-
facturer of machine tools, they decided to return
to their roots as a manufacturer on their 100th
anniversary and began this journey anew.
