Rationale of the Study

Bachelor of Arts in Major in Political Science is a newly opened program at National University in
2022. And approximately 200 first-year students enrolled at this course. And with that, this study aims to
determine the factors that influenced those students to choose the said program, whether it is affected by
family, peers, environment, future job opportunities or simply personal interest.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to explore the factors that have affected NU Manila 1st Year Political
Science Students A.Y. 2022-2023 into choosing AB Political Science as their undergraduate course. The
researchers aim to understand how the students of the said program weighed those factors to arrive at
their decision. National University - Manila introduced Political Science as a new undergraduate program
before the academic year 2022-2023, making this study a tool to discover the truths of the pioneer learner's
reason for taking AB Political Science. A survey questionnaire will be provided and sent through online
platforms such as MS Teams and Outlook, where learners would be able to view and volunteer to be
participants of the study.

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to identify what are the factors that influenced NU Manila 1st Year
Political Science Students A.Y. 2022-2023 into choosing AB Political Science as their undergraduate
course. Furthermore, this study aims to:
• To determine whether uncertainty, time/money pressure, information and goals,
consequences, motivation, self-regulation, cognition, emotion, and social pressure had an
influence on the participants’ decision, and.
• To classify which of the factors had an influence and which did not.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant to the following:
• National University. The results of this study will help the National University in better
accommodating and helping each student’s needs in order to succeed in the undergraduate
course they have chosen.
• Fellow students. The results of this study will help other students as they would be able to
identify what they considered when they decided that AB Political Science is their preferred
course.
• Parents. The results of this study will benefit the parents as they will know how their children
at this age decide by considering the several factors that this study provided.
• Future learners. The future learners can use the results of this study to further explain the
several factors that affected the decision making of first-year AB Political Science students
at National University. Furthermore, they can use the data from this study to compare with
their own when their study is connected to this one.

Hypothesis of the Study

• Uncertainty did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB Political Science as
their undergraduate course.
• Time/money pressure did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB Political
Science as their undergraduate course.
• Information and goals did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB Political
Science as their undergraduate course.
• Consequences of decision did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB
Political Science as their undergraduate course.
• Motivation did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB Political Science as
their undergraduate course.
• Self-regulation did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB Political Science
as their undergraduate course.
• Cognition did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB Political Science as
their undergraduate course.
• Emotion did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB Political Science as their
undergraduate course.
• Social pressure did not have an influence in the participants choosing AB Political Science
as their undergraduate course.

Participants
The respondents of this study are twenty NU Manila First Year students who are currently taking
AB Political Science as their Undergraduate Course and were chosen through purposive sampling.
Purposive sampling is the method by which the researchers rely on their own judgment when choosing
members of the population to participate in their surveys.
Data Gathering Procedure
The group adapted a questionnaire developed by Baquedano et. al (2009). It consists of nine
factors that may have influenced N.U. Manila 1st Year A.B. Political Science Students A.Y. 2022-2023 to
choose A.B. Political Science as their Undergraduate Course. The group used Likert’s scale with a range
of 1-4, with 1 being strongly disagree, 2 being disagree, 3 being agree, and 4 being strongly agree. It was
used to determine whether the participants are affected by any of the factors that are mentioned in the
questionnaire.

Statistical Treatment
The group used One Way ANOVA test or the f-test in analyzing the participants’ answers on
whether the factors influenced their decision in choosing AB Political Science as their undergraduate
course. The f-test is used when there are three or more variables that are needed to be assessed in order
to identify whether the hypothesis is correct or not.
