Sun

The Sun is actually a star! Earth and other planets travel

around the Sun. It takes Earth 365 days to travel
completely around the Sun. The Sun gives us our
warmth and our light.
Compared to Earth, the Sun is about 1109 times as big.

The Sun is extremely hot and very bright. You should

not look directly at the Sun without special protection for
your eyes.

Besides planets, other celestial objects move around the

Sun. Comets go around the Sun too. Comets are made of rock
and dust that sometimes produce “tails” of light.

People, plants, and animals need

the Sun to survive. Due to its
high temperatures, humans can
not live on the Sun. But we can be
sure to enjoy the Sun on those hot
summer days.

Mercury
Mercury is a fast moving planet. Why do you think
Mercury moves so fast around our Sun? It moves so fast
around our Sun because it is the smallest planet in our
solar system. This planet is also closest to our Sun.
Compared to Earth, Mercury is three times smaller.

Mercury can be very cold at night and extremely hot

during the day. It is a rocky planet with lots of craters.
What do you think may have created those large craters
on Mercury? Yes, you guessed it...ASTEROIDS!

Asteroids are rocky objects in space that sometimes hit celestial bodies like
planets and made large holes called craters.
Day
Unfortunately, we cannot live on Mercury
because it does not have air or water for us to
survive.
But with a telescope, we can search for this fast
pace planet. Look for a dust covered gray
celestial body in the night sky that we call
Night Mercury.

Venus
Venus is a very bright planet. Why do you think Venus is
so bright? It is so bright because it is the second planet
from our Sun.
Compared to Earth, Venus is about the same size.

Venus is one of the hottest planets in our solar system.

Can you think why Venus might be so hot? Yes, you are
on fire! Venus is so hot because it is closer to the sun than
other planets. The surface of Venus can get hotter than
the oven in your kitchen.

Venus also has many active volcanoes on it’s surface.

An active volcano is a landscape that releases hot gas and
Day liquid that will eventually form new land.

Earth
Earth is where we live! This is the only planet in our
solar system that provides air and water for us to survive.
Earth like all the other planets in our solar system,
moves around the Sun. The Sun is actually a very big
star.

The center of Earth is made of extremely hot liquid

metal. The surface of Earth is mostly water but it also
has some land. People and animals depend on Earth’s
water to survive. The water on this planet can be found
in the oceans, lakes, and rivers.
This is why Earth looks blue from outer space.

Earth only has one moon. We can see

Earth’s moon without using a
telescope. A telescope makes things far away
easier to see. Our planet can have
changing weather and temperatures.

From Earth, we can use a telescope

and see celestial bodies like other

Mars
Mars is often called the “red planet”. Why do you think
Mars was given this nickname? Mars has a reddish
brown surface. This is why we often call Mars the “red
planet”.
Compared to Earth, Mars is about twice as small.

Spacecraft have actually visited Mars. Scientist have

discovered that Mars is very cold and barren. Barren means
that the land is of poor quality to produce much or any vegetation.

The air on Mars is very thin. This means that if you

wanted to live on Mars you would have to wear a space
suit that provided you with oxygen. You would
also need to build a home with excellent air
conditioning.
A flight to Mars would take you 6 months, so
grab a few good books and get comfortable.

Jupiter
Jupiter is our biggest planet in our solar system but
spacecraft are unable to land on this planet. Why do you
think we are unable to land on Jupiter? Spacecraft and
people can not land on Jupiter because it is made of
mostly gas.
Compared to Earth, Jupiter is about eleven times as big.

It takes Jupiter about 12 years to circle our Sun. But it

only takes Jupiter 10 hours to make a complete rotation.
The rotation of a planet is when the planet moves in a circular motion on its
center, similar to a top. Jupiter
is known for a constant storm
called the Great Red Spot.

Jupiter also has 53 moons. That’s a lot of

moons! It is extremely cold on Jupiter both
day and night.

Saturn
Saturn is a gas giant in our solar system. Why do you
think we are unable to land on Saturn? Spacecraft and
people can not land on Saturn because it does not have a
solid surface.
Compared to Earth, Saturn is about 9-10 times as big.

It takes Saturn about 29 years to orbit or circle our Sun.

Orbit is the path of a celestial object to circle a star or in this case, our Sun.
Saturn is well known for its Saturn Rings. The rings are
made of pieces of rock and ice that can be the size of a
car. You wouldn't want to wear those rings on your

People and animals are unable to live on Saturn

Uranus
Uranus is considered an ice giant in our solar system.
Why do you think Uranus is called an ice giant? Uranus
is very similar to a gas giant planet but this planet has
more “ice” on it.
Compared to Earth, Uranus is about four times as big.

Uranus is best known for how it spins. Most planets

spins like a top. But Uranus spins on its side. Uranus has
27 moons and is a ringed planet. A ringed planet is a planet that
has orbiting rings around them.

Uranus is an extremely frigid planet in our solar system.

This means that humans would not survive on

Neptune is another ice giant in our solar system. What

a bright blue. The blue coloring comes from the gas and
ice found in its upper atmosphere. The atmosphere of a planet is
the gases that surround the planet like a blanket.
Compared to Earth, Uranus is about four times as big.

This celestial body is so far away from the Sun that it will
