HAZID Construction
methodology explained

1
The HAZID (Hazard Identification) methodology in the context of construction is a
structured approach used for the systematic identification of hazards and the
assessment of risks associated with all phases of a construction project. It aims to
prevent incidents by identifying potential risks at the earliest stages of the project.
Here’s how it generally works:

1.Preparation:
1. Define the scope of the HAZID analysis.
2. Select a multidisciplinary team including safety experts, project engineers, site
managers, etc.
3. Gather all relevant documentation (design plans, technical specifications, site data,
etc.).
2.Identification of Hazards:
1. Use checklists, historical data, industry standards, and brainstorming sessions to
identify potential hazards associated with different phases of the construction project
(design, construction, maintenance, demolition).
2. Examine aspects such as working at height, using heavy machinery, exposure to
hazardous substances, etc.
3.Risk Assessment:
1. Assess the risks associated with each identified hazard considering the likelihood of
occurrence and the severity of potential consequences.
2. Use risk matrices to classify risks based on their level of criticality.
2
1.Development of Control Measures:
1. Propose control measures for each identified risk to reduce it to an acceptable level.
2. These measures may include design modifications, personal protective equipment,
training, safe work procedures, etc.
2.Documentation and Reporting:
1. Compile a detailed HAZID report outlining the identified hazards, risk assessments, and
recommended control measures.
2. Ensure traceability of information and clear communication of the results to all
stakeholders.
3.Implementation and Monitoring:
1. Implement the recommended control measures.
2. Conduct regular follow-ups to verify the effectiveness of the measures, identify new
hazards as the project evolves, and update the risk assessment accordingly.

3
The HAZID approach in construction is proactive and aims to integrate safety from the
design phase and throughout the project. This not only helps to prevent accidents but also
optimizes processes and reduces costs by avoiding interruptions due to unexpected
incidents.

As an HSE Team, the effective implementation and management of the HAZID

methodology are essential to maintain a safe work environment and comply with industry
standards.
