LIFE EVENTS ARE PURELY A COINCIDENCE.
SATO (CONT'D)
(placing his file on the
table)
Hello. My name is Sato. I'm working
with the Kyoto Police Department,
and I'm here to-
AKASUKI
(blunt)
I know what you're here for. You're
a Psychologist- you're here to find
out if I'm actually pure evil or
just mentally insane.
(notices the surprise in
Sato's eyes)
I overheard the guards.
Sato tries to maintain his calm demeanor.
2.
SATO
(smiling)
I'm here to know you better. I want
to know who Akasuki was before she
got convicted.
AKASUKI
She was a nobody. Still is.
SATO
(opening his case file)
Let me see... Oh, a silver medal in
gymnastics... Placed second in the
AMA-CAS [academic merit associates
council for advance studies], and
had a good academic and
disciplinary track record up until
the incident.
He looks up to see a slightly more agitated and retreated
Akasuki.
AKASUKI
(scoffs)
That's who I am. Always missing the
mark.
Sato flips through the pages, smirking at the sarcastic
remark. Only it wasn't sarcastic.
SATO
The official report says you
murdered a 'Ms. Hashimoto' during
class hours... with a pen.
Akasuki says nothing. Sato picks up on this.
SATO (CONT'D)
Why would a near perfect school
student do such a thing?
AKASUKI
The file won't tell you everything.
Sato nods slowly, his gaze lingering on the file for a beat
too long.
SATO
(slowly looking up)
The file won't. But you can.
He leans back in his chair, exuding patience. Akasuki's eyes
flicker, the defiance replaced by a hint of vulnerability.

SATO (CONT'D)
You say "missing the mark." Makes
me wonder, what mark were you
aiming for?
Akasuki remains silent, her fists clenched.
SATO (CONT'D)
The silver medal, the academic
success, they all point to someone
striving for excellence. Yet, you
say you were "nobody." Isn't there
a disconnect there, Akasuki?
She looks conflicted. But there is hope.
AKASUKI
(barely a whisper)
I wasn't trying to be "nobody." I--
I...
Sato keeps his gaze steady, waiting for Akasuki to finish.
But she gives up and looks down again. Sato then reaches into
his file and pulls out a specific page, taking his time to
seemingly examine it.
SATO
(reading from the file)
"The loss of a close family member
around the time of the incident."
Akasuki's eyes widen momentarily, but she quickly averts her
gaze.
SATO (CONT'D)
It says here you had a twin sister.
Was she the one who...
AKASUKI
--Yes.
SATO
But taking another life, even
someone you felt hatred towards,
won't bring your sister back.
AKASUKI
It won't. But it'll...
(beat)
It silenced the pain. For a while.
She takes a shaky breath, her voice barely above a whisper.
4.
SATO
(confused)
Your sister took her own life. On
her own accord--
AKASUKI
(silent outburst)
You don't know anything about her.
You only believe what's written in
that file, a file filled with cold
facts and assumptions.
Sato realizes he'd crossed the line.
SATO
(taken aback)
Sorry. Too far.
AKASUKI
I won't deny what I did, Mr. Sato.
It was wrong, unforgivable. But I
can't change the past. All I can do
is try to understand it, to
understand myself.
SATO
-Then tell me. Tell me what you
want the world to know. Tell me who
Akasuki is.
AKASUKI
I'm telling you this not to justify
my actions, but because... maybe,
just maybe, by understanding where
I came from, you can understand why
I did what I did.
A silence settles.
AKASUKI (CONT'D)
I... I don't know where to start.
SATO
Tell me about your relationship
with you sister.
AKASUKI
--I had an older twin sister.
