AIR SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION

1. Description

A. The gas generator incorporates an air system that uses bleed

air from the sixth, eighth, and thirteenth compressor stages
for anti-surge, turbine cooling, and turbine rotor thrust
balance purposes.

B. There are two sixth stage bleed valves. Each is controlled

by a solenoid valve that channels eighth stage muscle air
for actuation of the valves. The solenoid valves are
controlled electrically by the gas generator electronic
control system. Air from the two bleed valves discharges to
atmosphere through ducts to the exhaust stack. The sixth
stage bleed valve on the right side of the gas generator
incorporates a venting valve at the muscle air connection.
This valve provides for fast bleed valve response when
electrical generator load and gas generator speed are
reduced rapidly.

C. There are five eighth stage bleed valves controlled by four

solenoid valves that control eighth stage muscle air for
actuation of the bleed valves. Three of these valves
discharge to atmosphere and two provide cooling air for the
low pressure turbine case. Two additional eighth stage
ports, without valves, provide cooling and rotor thrust
balance air for the power turbine. Air is provided from
these two ports whenever the gas generator is operated.

D. There is one thirteenth stage bleed valve. The valve is

actuated by thirteenth stage muscle air controlled by a
solenoid valve. Air from the bleed valve discharges to
atmosphere through ducts to the exhaust stack. Two
additional thirteenth stage ports provide cooling air for
the high pressure turbine case at four locations on the
case. These ports supply air whenever the gas generator is
operated.

E. The air system has provisions for the use of an external

pressure source to maintain the solenoid controlled bleed
valves in the closed position when the gas generator is not
operated. The external pressure source is used to prevent
the loss of heated air supplied to the gas generator to
prevent condensation and corrosion when the gas generator is
not operated. The external pressure source also is used
during water wash cycles to prevent loss of the water
through the overboard bleed valves.

(4) Connect the muscle line again.

(5) Start the gas generator and increase rotor speed

several times up to the bleed close point, to permit
the valve to open and close or refer to Air System V,
Test-01.

NOTE: Bleed valves that cannot be freed by lubrication and

bleed valves that need frequent lubrication should be
replaced or removed and overhauled.

NOTE: The only lubricant approved for this application is

WC-393. This is the only product known to P&W which
keeps its lubricating properties at engine operating
temperatures without gumming or coking which can
result in an increased seizing of the valve.

NOTE: WC-393 lubricant can be obtained from the following
