its golden flank was drowned in purple shadow, and above it the sky curved crystal clear, without

much closer together. It's definitely a hallmark of Gilded Age American writing that is often quite hit
or miss with me. Fans of the Gilded Age might enjoy their tales of the tragically elite told in turgid
prose, but it's just not for me and I stand by my narrow-minded assessment of the two even if it's
unbecoming of me as a former English major who ought to know better. That made me wonder about

other, and then down on the outspread glories of the Palatine and the Forum, with the same
expression of vague but benevolent approval. The next day I tracked down my colleague and we
compared observations, talking over one another in our enthusiasm, our words crowding out the
noise of the hallway as the bell rang and students swarmed the halls between classes. So much so
that I intend to keep this volume, which I never would have thought would happen. Wharton's own
attitude toward her protagonist, while sympathetic, seems to me slightly rueful at the woman's
idealism. But her friend can be characterized as greedy and spoilt person who does not know what
friendship is, rating only money and social status. When World War I broke out, she organized

frontlines. When she told Mrs. Slade that she and Delphin were able to meet, a complete shift

Fever author demonstrates that physical closeness cannot be equated with mutual comprehension
through the examples of Mrs. Ansley and Mrs. Slade who are physically close but mentally and
emotionally worlds apart. There was no one of whom she had less right to think unkindly than of
Grace Ansley. In others Wharton details the absurdities of the conventional society she was a part

I was not a big reader and I'm ninety percent sure she also gave us Ethan Frome and I never even

2010 I enjoyed this collection of what are considered some of Edith Wharton's finest short stories so
much that I read it all over again, right after reading it the first time. Edith's creativity and talent soon
became obvious: By the age of eighteen she had written a novella, (as well as witty reviews of it)

emotions should make one great otherwise what is the use of them even if it may be love to your
offspring. Perhaps Wharton is doing something ironic and fun here with this conversational combat
between these two older women, as the restaurant is described in the opening lines as having a
