MULTIMEDIA AND HYPERMEDIA

MULTIMEDIA
 Uses multiple form of information content and processing.
 Using more than one medium of expression or communicate
 Use of electronic media to store and experience multimedia content
Ex. Websites, videos, pictures, music, ppt, kiosk
Examples of Multimedia Application:
 CD- Interactive  MMS
 WWW (World Wide Web)  Multimedia Kiosk
USE OF MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY
 Computer- Based Training (sa computer icomplete and tasks)
 Teaching aid  Virtual Reality
 References  Virtual Surgery
 Entertainment  Information Kiosk
 Simulation
ADVANTAGES OF MULTIMEDIA
 Easy to use
 Enhancement of text only messages
 Improves over Traditional Audi-Video Presentations
 Gains and Holds Attention (limit 1 or 2 animations)
 Good for “computer-phobics”
 Multimedia is entertaining as well as Educational
 Cost effective and Trendy
DISADVANTAGES OF MULTIMEDIA
 Expensive  Requires special hardware
 Not always easy to configure  Not always compatible
BASIC ELEMENTS
 Text, Graphic, Animation, Video, Audio
*Websites need hosts
Free Websites:
 Google Sites  Wix
TEXTS
- Characters used to create words, sentences, and paragraphs
- Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor
- Categorized to:
o Alphabets o Symbols
o Special Characters
- Use:

 Heading/ Title  Scrolling Text

 Bullet/ List  Navigation
 Paragraph  Text as graphics
GRAPHICS
 Digital representation of non-text information such as drawing, chart, or photograph
USE OF GRAPHICS
 Add emphasis Illustrate concepts

 Direct attention Provide background concept

ADVANTAGES OF GRAPHICS IN MULTIMEDIA
 Convey information more quickly than text
 Make complex into simple
 Enhance online teaching and learning
 Enhance communication with some disabled groups particularly those with learning
difficulties or cognitive impairments
DISADVANTAGES OF GRAPHICS
 Take longer to download (depends on file size)
 Require use of plug-in that the user may not have or be able to install
 Create accessibility barriers for some users
2 CATEGORIES OF GRAPHIC
1. Vector
- Images created with software that uses geometrical formulas to represent images
- Composed of individual elements e.g line polygon, polygon, with their own attributes
that can be individually edited
- Can be created using any drawing software, eg. Illustrator
ADVANTAGES OF VECTORS
 Ability to resize and rotate a graphic without distortions (blurs) – Major Advantage
 Smaller file size
DISADVANTAGES OF VECTORS
- The more complex, the larger the file size and the longer they take to appear on
screen
- Can’t display photorealistic quality. (Why? Imo namang gienhance)

2. Bitmap
- Called raster graphic (white portion of the tv)
- Represent image as an array of dots, called pixels
- Resolution dependent and generate large file size
- Blur when resized
- Ex. Realistic photos such as landscapes
ADVANTAGES OF BITMAP
 Photorealistic
 Can set the colour of every individual pixel in the image
DISADVANTAGES OF BITMAP
- Memory intensive --- higher resolution, the larger file size
- When image is enlarged, individual coloured squares become visible and the
illusions of a smooth image is lost to the viewer
ANIMATION
 Series of graphic that create an illusion of motion
 Entertainment multimedia titles in general and children’s titles specifically rely on animation
USE OF ANIMATION
 Attract attention  Demonstrations
 Inform about the state of process  Interactive Simulations
VIDEO
 Technology of electronically capturing, reading, processing, storing, transmitting, and
reconstructing a sequence of still images representing things in motion
USE OF VIDEO
 Embedding of video in multimedia applications is a powerful way to convey information
which can incorporate a personal element which other media lack
 Promoting television shows, films, or other non-computer media that traditionally have used
trailers in their advertising
 Giving users an impression of a speaker’s personality
 Showing things that move. For example a clip from a motion picture, product demos of
physical products are also well suited for video
ADVANTAGES OF ANIMATION
 Can be easily edited
 Video is stored as standard computer file
 Software motion video does not require specialized hardware for playback
 Digital video requires neither a video board in the computer nor an external device (which
adds extra costs and complexity) such as videodisc players
 Long-lasting
DISADVANTAGES OF ANIMATION
- Requires large storage complexity devices
- Copies can be made illegally
- Need fast computer system for playback and capture
- Requires knowledge of digital complexion technology ( video quality will decrease
when compressed )
SOUND
 Best way to attract attention
 Audio conveys only effective way to convey an idea, elicit an emotion, or dramatize point
USES
 Music

- background - Attention grabber - Sound effect

 Speech
- Narration - Instruction
2 TYPES OF MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION

1. LINEAR PRESENTATION
 Contact progresses without any navigation control for the viewer such as a conema
presentation
 shown in a pre-determined order
2. NON-LINEAR PRESENTATION
 Offer interactivity to control progress as used with a computer or used in self-paced
computer based training

HYPERMEDIA
 Information is linked and cross-referenced in many different ways and is widely
available to end users
HYPERTEXT
 Database in which nonlineary (wala nako nasulat)
 software system that links topics on the screen to related information and graphics,
which are typically accessed by a point-and-click method (google)
2 TYPES OF LINK
1. Internal
2. External
ADDITIONAL WORDS
 HTML - Hypertext Mark-Up Language
 WWW – a global hypermedia system on the internet. Described as wide-area hypermedia
information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal …
