TAKING THE FETAL HEART TONE

1. Explain to the patient the purpose of
the procedure.
2. Ask patient to void.
3. Screen and position the patient on the
examining table in a supine position
exposing abdomen.
4. Ascertain the presentation and position
of the fetus by (performing the 4 steps
of Leopold’s Maneuver) palpating the
abdomen of the mother.
5. Place the bell of the stethoscope over
the quadrant of the mother’s abdomen
where fetus back is located
6. Listen for and count the fetal heart tone
in one full minute.
7. Take note of the rate, regularity,
strengths and any deviation of the fetal
heart tone.
8. Assess for variability of the fetal heart
rate.
a. as it occurs spontaneously, and/or
b. as it occurs with fetal activity,
and/or
c. as it occurs with palpation of the
fetus.
